Anyone making baby bedding?

So is anyone else planning to make their baby bedding?  I am looking to purchase the fitted crib sheets, but would like to make the crib skirt and window valance, as well as bumpers and a blanket to be used later.  My question is, where are you finding fabrics?  I have found some beautiful upholstery fabrics at JoAnn Fabrics, but am having a hard time finding softer, baby-friendly fabrics that aren't just traditional pastel pink, blue, green and yellow.  Anyone else having any luck?  Online places to look?  Stores?

I made everything for DD and got my stuff from fabric.com. Just google promo codes and there are always ones out there!

  • Good for you for being crafty and DIY!!! I've gone to fabricville not sure if that's only in Canada for my fabrics. Of to wok shops. I'm sure you know that bumpers are considered a health hazard so breathable fabrics or no bumpers at all are recommended.

I bought some from jaqsfabric and fabric.com.  The former is expensive, but I've found some great sales there in the past.  The latter lost a $120 order once, and I refuse to shop there again.  They had UPS or whatever deliver it, but it never was delivered.  I got the credit card company to get the money back, but fabric.com customer service was terrible.

Anyway, I'm purchasing fitted crib sheets (just two), but I'm planning on making a crib skirt.  I think I'll make a simple box pleated skirt made of linen.  Or maybe just a plain cotton.

I already made a little quilt:

(pic before it was ironed)  I put soft cotton flannelette on the back

I also knit a giant soft winter blanket from roving! I had to make the knitting needles from PVC pipes, but I love the result.  It will be just for decoration (it's very hairy) but can't wait to put it hanging over the crib when LO is older.

I ordered the comforter/quilt on Etsy and will have my grandmother make the bed skirt, valance, and fitted sheets. I wanted specific fabric since I'm doing a "Very Hungry Caterpillar" theme, so I ordered from Fabric.com. I was able to get a 10% discount and free shipping.

  • I just ordered the fabric for LOs quilt this weekend!  I'm making it from the retired Fox Trails line. We're going for an camping/outdoors/modern-ish feel in the nursery and this fabric was the cutest thing I could find. I bought the fabric from Etsy (TONS of great fabric shops on there).

Here is the fabric line I bought from. I got a Jelly Roll, which has one piece of each fabric (more than is pictured here...):

I bought the fitted sheets and my mom is making the window treatment and quilt (will go on chair for now and on bed later when baby is old enough).  She is actually a decorative seamstress for a living so I really luck out with this.  We are doing a puppy theme and we have all our colors and patterns ready with some fabric bought.  We are using a swaddling blanket for the back of the quilt and the front fabrics and window treatment fabrics we still need to get.  We will go to some local fabric stores since we don't have any JoAnns around.  Another place to look might be a quilt shop if you have one.

Love the knit job. Haven't had the guts to try that yet but in love with the whole idea.

  • I'm in the process of making LO's curtains using cotton fabric from Joann's. I will do a print front and a solid white for the backing. I'm also making the crib skirt but haven't found a pattern I like. I bought DD1's crib skirt and it doubled as a twin bed skirt so it was huge for her crib. I just about went batty tucking it in every time I changed her sheets. So I'm making the skirt for DD2 so I don't have that problem! Again, I will use simple cotton fabric from Joann's. I will also make a lamp shade by covering a shade with cotton fabric and adhering it with spray adhesive.

  • My MIL always makes a quilt for her grandchildren, so we'll go pick out fabric when I visit her next.  We'll go to Hobby Lobby or JoAnn Fabrics for fabric.  I'm using light pink, hot rasberry pink, lilac, and muted lime green as my color choices.  So I'm hoping to have some luck with finding patterns with those colors.  Then the back will be a rasberry pink flannel.  I'm super excited to go fabric shopping.  I also plan on making a bumper, fitted sheet, and skirt to match the quilt.

  • I made DS1's bedding, and am doing it for this LO. For DS1, I bought his fabric from JoAnn's since there's a store here, but their selection sucks and I couldn't find anything I liked this time. I ordered from Fabric.com. I got a cotton fabric and a couple different minky fabrics for a comforter, pillow case, changing pad cover and railing covers to prevent teeth marks. I think I'm skipping the crib skirt this time, it only looks good when the mattress is in the highest position which is not very long!

Wait, I thought bumpers were a nono these days?? This is all so confusing!
You are correct.  They are not advised for newborns/young infants (and are even banned in at least one state).  However, when kids are old enough that they are flailing around and may get a leg stuck in the slats you can use them again (they are also able to move around freely and are outside of the major SIDS and suffocation danger zones).

I'm planning to make at least a bed skirt... depending how that goes i may take on other sewing projects.

ETA: I think i'm going to give a fitted sheet a try.

We did see that one, but my husband and I wanted some brighter colors so we ordered this one:

  • Thank you all for the great ideas and suggestions.  I am considering the bumpers for "installation" later after SIDS risk has passed.

I saw a comment about the length of the crib skirt - I found a pattern on Pinterest that is SO EASY and genius that makes an "adjustable" crib skirt so when you lower the mattress you can make the length adjustment.  https://www.viewalongtheway.com/2012/04/silliest-little-adjustable-crib-skirt-tutorial-on-the-web/

This would be great for anyone wanting just a simple skirt (no ruffles).  We are having a boy, so ruffles aren't a priority for us.  I may add a pleat in the middle of the front panel just to be fancy.

I'll keep shopping and try to post photos when it comes together.  We are doing a "world traveler" theme and I am so excited about how it is shaping up!

I love the etsy store "PaisleyMade.". She makes lots of baby and nursery gear. She also sells her fabrics through another store, Spindle Cloth. Yes I know the woman in real life, but it's not my store so I think it's okay to share here. The Spindle Cloth site is https://www.etsy.com/shop/spindlecloth.unfortunately, the shop is basically closed for a month or so because she just had a baby boy. But that is where I'm getting everything for my nursery, once she's back to business.

  • I found some cute flannels from the Fat Quarter Shop online.  We'll probably be getting an ikea crib and I plan to make fitted sheets, plus curtains.

We don't get super hot weather in Seattle, so I'm fine with using flannel for the softness for sheets.

I also like Hawthorne Threads (online)

  • I picked star wars clone wras as my nursery theme so I am making everything but the crib sheets for the nursery :) got the curtains done already :)
  • I will not be, but I know that when I do fabric shopping I hit up hobby lobby, micheals and joann
