Toddlers: 24 Months+

Potty training fail

DD is 25 months. She has been showing pretty clear interest in toiletting for a while now, and she loves coming into the bathroom with us, watching us, pretending to wipe herself, flushing the toilet and saying "bye bye pee pee!" etc. She also enjoys sitting on her potty for fun, and she hates having her diaper changed.

So I decided to try training on Friday. Total fail. As  soon as I told her to pull down her pants and sit on the potty, she started a tantrum. Picked up the potty and threw it across the room. Pulled the seat off and threw that. Screamed and yelled. I just walked away and ignored.

I admit I was surprised though. She learns very quickly, so I thought this would work well.

 Advice? Thoughts?

LOL. Wait a year and try again. She's clearly not ready, and she told you. Emphatically.

A year? Laugh. I'll try again next month.

Make it more of a game vs "told her to pull down her pants and potty" - have the potty available and encourage her to use it - particularly when she's already bare bummed (like bathtime).
  • I would wait a few months, till she is about about 28 months. And let her run around bare bottomed. Let her take herself to the potty, don't force her to sit on the potty.

I'd give it a month so she forgets about this first attempt. Then, I'd make a huge deal out of getting rid of diapers and wearing big girl panties. I'd talk that up for a week or so before doing anything. Then I'd put her in panties (and nothing else) and would not go back to diapers. I wouldn't force her to sit on the potty, but I would remind her often to tell me when she needs to go. I'd be prepared for there to be lots of accidents, and I'd celebrate and reward when she pees in the potty, even if it's only a little bit.

This is exactly what I did with DS1 and it was a pretty painless transition from diapers to potty.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
