Father in law made a crib.

So my sister in law told my wife today that we could use the crib that my father in law made and they used with their now 5 year old as well as their new 2 month old.

I'm nervous about using something that I'm unsure about the safety of it.  Meanwhile my wife is worried not only would my FIL be insulted but my SIL would also be since she has used it with one child and currently with the second.

Should I be worried.  I have no idea what it is or the style.  Not sure if it was completely hand made or a "kit" of sorts.

I hope the next 7 months will not be full of issues of who we are worried about insulting since while I love my in-laws this is our first child and I'm sure they all had the same worries and such.

  • Just say you had your heart set on another crib.

  • You can look up current safety regulations for cribs and see if it meets the standards.

There is nothing magical about a commercially made crib. Remember all the crib recalls in the past few years? If FIL constructed the crib well and it's still in good condition, it could be fine to use from a safety perspective. And if you can show good cause why the crib isn't safe, I would hope FIL wouldn't want you using the crib anyway.

  • Won't th other baby still be in it? Can you make an excuse about it not matching the other furniture you want?

I wouldn't feel comfortable using it.

That's what I was thinking about the new niece still being in it anyway.

I'm sure we can figure it out and if need be we can use everyone's suggestion and just figure out a way to tell them we really had our hearts set on something else

  • Is it a crib or a cradle?  If your SIL is still using it for her 2 month old but she's offering it to you guys, I'm thinking it must not be an actual crib, like what the baby sleeps in for the first couple of years or else SIL would be holding onto it.  If it's a cradle, I would take it and use it for naps.  Maybe you should ask and clarify what it actually is.

From what I know it's a crib.  We actually already have a solid wood hand made cradle from a different family member on my side.  I'll have to try and be nonchalant about it and dig for more information from my SIL or possibly just ask my BIL
