fasting before glucose test

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I go for a glucose test next week and was not told to fast before hand.  The nurse said that it would be OK to eat, just not to have anything overly sugary like ice cream of a sugary cereal.  THing is, I thought most people had been told to fast...has anyone else been told they don't have to fast before the test?

Re: fasting before glucose test

  • Doc told me NOT to fast, just not too much sugar before. Just like you said.

  • My OB said I don't HAVE to fast. Mine is at 8am, and I don't usually eat before then anyway. I might have something small though, because I anticipate being really nauseous.

  • I just had mine yesterday.  You do not need to fast.  In fact there are no pregnancy related blood tests that require fasting.

Oh can you imagine having to fast?  I cant go 2 hours without eating something!  LOL.

  • Midwife told me not to fast, same as with last pregnancy. Just not to do much sugar/carbs (having a bit of protein will actually often help prevent a false positive, according to my MW)

  • I wasn't told one way or the other but since I did mine first thing in the morning I just rolled out of bed and downed the stuff, no eating before.

I was told I didn't need to fast before the 1 hour glucose.

However, I failed that and have to do the 3-hour glucose, which does require an 8-14 hour fast, so maybe that's what you've seen mentioned.

OMG, really??  That is crazy!  I can't imagine.  Good luck with that one!

My CW swears up and down she had to fast before her 1 hour both times, and was shocked when I said I don't have to. She's BSC, though, so...

  • Ok, I guess then I was given the right information.  Thanks ladies!

  • I was told to fast before hand but I scheduled mine for early in the morning.  the lab is right down the hall from my OB's office so I'll go to the lab first, down the drink, go for my appointment with my OB and back to the lab.  they told me if I don't fast it may result in having to do the 3 hour.

    Ditto.
  • I went for mine today and my doc suggested eggs for breakfast and the tech told me today what I had was good and only to drink water before hand.

As a treat to DH and I, we went to McDonalds right after the hour! :D
  • I don't fast for the first test if I fail then the next test I have to fast for. My midwife told me to have some eggs for breakfast wait a bit and then go in.

This. My doctor's office said I could eat my "usual" breakfast which is usually cereal and milk w OJ but my best friend warned against it. I ended up having 3/4 cup lowfat cottage cheese at 8 am and drank the glucose at 10:30 with the blood draw at 11:30. I ended up with a 116, which is great. I would say eggs or cottage cheese or anything small proteiny would be fine, and schedule as early as possible.

  • Definitely don't have to fast before the 1hr glucose challenge test, but if you have to do the 3 hr glucose tolerance test you have to fast. If you have risk factors your dr/midwife may send you to do the 3 hr one straight off the bat so if you do have gestational diabetes you can be diagnosed earlier. Hope that helps!
  • I guess I'm in the minority because my doc said I have to fast for 8 hours before the 1hour glucose test. I was with a different office with my last pregnancy and it was the same way.
I even was asking the front desk about a way to do the test where I could eat beforehand and she was like, no way. Absolutely not. The test requires fasting. ?!

    Same.
  • Mine said do NOT fast. They want accurate results. I ate a protein filled breakfast to help my belly take in all the sugar from the drink

  • my appt. is at 8 am tomorrow. i was told to fast starting at midnight tonight

  • Yes my doctor also said not to fast. Actually she said the results would not be accurate if you fast OR if you ate a sugary breakfast so you are supposed to eat, but no sugar, juice, fruit beforehand.
  • My test is at 9am and I was told not to eat anything after midnight but water is OK- but to bring a snack right after the test because I will have my regular appt then and they don't want me to wait until after that to eat.
