So DS has had a major runny nose for a week and a half. Called the pedi b/c usually a cold doesn't last that long. Pollen count is super high where we live so I am wondering if he could have bad allergies so young? He seems fine, knock on wood is sleeping fine at night but his nose is driving me crazy. It is dripping on everything in the house, on me, I use the nasal spray which typically works well when he has a cold but with this it is not doing a thing. Just wondering if anyone else's LO maybe has allergies.
Re: Allerigies?
Our pollen count skyrocketed the past few weeks, and LO has definitely had some symptoms, like clear snot, sneezing, etc. I talked to his pedi at his 18 mo appointment. She said they wouldn't do allergy testing this young, and if he really seemed miserable, we could give him the appropriate dosage of kid's allergy meds. They did seem to help some, but I don't want him taking them constantly, until we know that's the real issue.
That young though - it can't hurt to ask the pedi. I think the nasal spray is a good solution, and maybe a humidifier too.
My pedi said that it is very unlikely to have allergies that young - they usually don't develop until at least 2 years old. Its always possible, but not likely.
As far as a cold it could last as long as 14 days.
It's possible. It only takes one season of exposure to trigger an allergic reaction, especially if allergies run in your family.
I put my 18-month-old on cetirizine last week because he was exhibiting all the symptoms of seasonal allergies, including itchy eyes with redness that got worse when he played outside. I give him 1/4 tsp in the morning and 1/2 tsp after dinner.
