Cloth Diapering

Stink problem partially solved!!

I posted a few days ago about strong ammonia problems with our overnight diapers. Well, 2 nights ago we had a leak (operator error) and my DH changed the diaper. He told me he just used a prefold since it was half way through the night.  When I changed DS in the morning - no strong ammonia smell was to be found!  So I put him in his normal overnight prefold and a different hemp insert for last night and same thing today!  Woo-hoo!  Now I know it's just the hemp inserts causing the strong ammonia smells.

I think I will do several hot washes and see if that helps.  Then maybe add in some blue dawn???  I've never had to strip diapers and for some reason it makes me nervous.

  • I like to boil them, with some lemon juice.i think is better than waste to much water for stripping and its amusin how duty the water turns when you boil hemp.

  • Thanks ladies!  I hate the thought of all the water wasted on a strip too.  I'll give the boiling a shot for sure.   I already told me DH we need to get a little pail for soaking.  So hopefully that will prevent this from being a regular issue.  Do you use anything in the soaking water or just plain on H20?

I just use one of those basins you get at the hospital, I've seen them at dollar tree too. Just water. An FYI, I tried boiling, ammonia remover, more detergent, a wash instead of rinse, everything I could think of. Nothing worked. You need to give them a real deep clean. Hence the tide. But then I go back to my normal stuff and we're fine. Stripping removes soap residue. Probably not your problem.

Thanks!  I'm excited to have the problem localized so I can fix it.

I soak my inserts in the morning twice. I put the diapers in a bucket and use a plunger that I only use for this to agitate them, then empty the water out and soak them in fresh water (I also plunge again). Sometimes if she was in the diaper for longer than 12 hours, it already smells slightly ammonia-y so I added a little bit of bac out for the second soak. It's probably overkill for most people's situations, but the second clean water soak helped a lot, and after adding plunging I haven't had any issues at all. It really helps to get the pee out of the diaper efficiently.

  • ^^^ also, this doesn't take as long as it sounds. Including fill and plunge time it takes me maybe two or three minutes to take care of in the morning. I empty the first 'soak' immediately, and let them soak for 10-15 minutes for the second soak.

  • Totally agree with the soak method, it really helps! I've even left them overnight till I could get to washing them.
