Daycare ?? - Drop off related

I do home daycare and have for quite some time. One little girl (2 yrs) who I have has been with me for 5 months. The last month she has been very clingy to her mother in the mornings and cries a bit like it is her first day. As soon as mom is gone she is fine. At the end of the day she cries when she has to leave. Is this normal?? I feel funny about her crying when she gets here. During the day she seems to love me... hugs and high fives, etc. But that initial drop off is just weirding me out.

Re: Daycare ?? - Drop off related

  • For what it's worth, my DS went through something similar around that time too. He cried bloody murder when I would drop him off, and the daycare teachers would literally have to pry him off my leg.  It was AWFUL and super heart-breaking, but he was totally fine and happy within 1 minute of me leaving (I would often sit outside the door until he calmed down), and never wanted to leave at the end of the day, so I knew he was happy there.  This lasted a decent amount of time like a couple months, but he eventually outgrew it.

It's totally normal. Lots of them go through phases like this. I prefer when they cry being dropped off with me, rather than crying when I give them back to the parents. That just makes the parents feel so bad!

  • Yes completely normal. A lot of kids have trouble with transitions at that age. Both of my boys did that. Ds1 cried at pickup as well. It lasted a few months and then it was over.

  • Thanks for the input! I was stressing out. I talked to mom about it and it turns out she also thinks it has to do with her doing some longer shifts and not seeing her as often. It is usually the mornings where she drops her off and doesn't see her until the next morning she thinks.
