For the last week and a half or so my LO has gone from sleeping a 5-5.5 hour stretch to now only sleeping about a maximum of 3 hours at night. I already wake up at 5 a.m. to get myself and LO ready for the day, but lately he is waking up at 3 a.m. and 4 a.m.. I never get back to sleep after that, because I will try to rock him back to sleep or walk with him, but then every time I try to set him down he wakes back up and we start the process all over again.
LO is formula fed and when he wakes up he is not looking for a bottle. Sometimes he will want his paci, but more importantly I think he just wants to be held. I did not want to do CIO until six months---but now I am wondering if I am establishing bad habits by always picking him up at night when he is crying. Note: I do wait until he is actually crying, not just talking or making noises in his crib.
Any tips out there on what I can do to try and save my sanity and get him back to sleeping at least what he was sleeping? I have a long commute and day at work and this is getting to be exhausting. Any experience or recommendations would be much appreciated.
Re: 4 month sleep regression
I'm breast feeding but similar issues (4 months as well). He was almost sleeping through the night and then 2 weekends ago he was up every 2 hours....ugh. Most of last week I was up 3 times overnight.
It's now 6 hours the first time we put him down then up a few hours later. Last night bed at 8:30, up at 2:30, then 5, then he slept until 7:30....that never ever happens tho, normally he's up at 6:15 or so.
For me, every time I go in there he needs something, diaper change, feeding. The only time I don't do at least one is when he's only been down for less then an hour. There have been a couple times where I put my hand in his chest and Rock him in the crib while I sing to him.
Give it another week. He's so much better this week then last week and make sure he gets his naps during the day.
My DD is going through something very similar. Sunday night was terrible, she went to be at 7:30 and then was up at 9, 11:30, and 3:00 and then up for the day at 5:40. Last night was a little better because we made sure she ate a ton of formula before bed. That definitely helped, she only woke up once last night. If your son is waking up, but not needing anything I would try letting him fuss for a bit to see if he can settle back down.

There's a page just about sleep regressions. We are going to start sleep training DD and putting her to bed drowsy but awake. We did last night and it worked great. Good luck, I know how much it stinks.
