Dropping a nap?

Hi Everyone,

I'm dropping in from my BMB to ask about my 14 month old's napping.  Lately he has been sleeping beautifully at night from 7pm-7:30am and taking two naps per day.  His first is around 9:30 and lasts about 1-1.5 hours.  Normally he goes back down at 1:30ish and sleeps another hour to hour and a half.

Suddenly, he is really fighting the afternoon nap.  Once he actually goes to sleep, he sleeps a long time (1-1.5hrs).  Getting him to go to sleep hasn't been a problem until now, and it's just the afternoon nap.  Is this a sign that we need to drop a nap?  I put him down later today and he's just been babbling in his crib for the past 30 minutes!  He's been sleeping the best at night when he goes to bed right at 7, so I hate to push the nap too far back and make him push bedtime back.  Anyone have a similar experience and have any suggestions?  Thanks!

  • Yes, we had the same thing.  It's totally normal and it happens at this age.  Two of my friends are going through it now too.

Our son is now 20 mos and we made the switch at 15mos and it took a rough long month before he was solid on one nap.

Around 12mos we had to shorten both naps in order for them to even happen.  We stalled the process as long as we could.  A lot of moms shorten the first nap little by little and maybe bring the second nap a little earlier for awhile.  Then once the first nap is pretty much gone, just have the one nap start at around 11ish for a few days, then move it to 11:30 for a few days, then 11:45, etc....

Expect some overtiredness.  We had night wakings and some early morning wakings during the switch, but after that it was smooth sailing.  Also, once you get to one nap, in the beginning, you have to make bed time earlier for just a few weeks so they don't get sooooo tired.

Also expect the nap to be short at first once it's just one nap.  It starts to get longer little by little.  That's where the early bed time comes in handy.

    Good luck!
