Dairy elimination diet ? (repost from BF board)

As per my LC's orders, I'm doing a dairy elimination for 3 weeks to see if that helps DD's rash and fussiness. I didn't realise how hard it was until I had to cut out ALL dairy- butter, cheese, yogurt, milk, whey, casein, anything with lactose or lactylase in the ingredients..

I feel like I'm now eating a lot more unhealthy stuff because of these restrictions (I am quite a picky eater and don't like the taste of soy and absolutely despise coconut). Because I can't have protein through dairy, and most grilled/ sauteed foods at restaurants have butter, I've been eating lots of fried foods and not enough veggies (I usually take my veggies in the form of soups, but all have cream in them!).

Quite frankly, with a 2 month old, I have barely enough time to put together a sandwich (again, can't eat lunch meat b/c it is cured with lactose) so I can't make dairy free dinners and lunches every day. And it is way too expensive to eat out all the time. Even microwave meals all have some sort of dairy in them! HELP!!

I guess my question is- what do you do to stay dairy free that doesn't take up all of your time? And what do you do for snacks?

  • do you really need to go that dairy free/??  my DD is super fussy/gassy after ice cream and has had some diaper rash thats hard to get rid of and vomiting so I am trying to eliminate dairy but only ice cream, yogurt, milk, etc....not any milk protein. I have to tell you that I really dont feel that all the protein goes through the milk. my son is SEVERE egg allergic. I breastfed him till almost 2 y/o and would eat eggs from time to time and he would not have a reaction although the allergist said he should have. Now DD seems to vomit all day when i eat eggs so I am not eating them. but I still eat food with eggs. just wondering if you have to really be that strict. I doubt it. i wouldnt worry about what food is cooked in- but maybe just use EVOO for grilling veggies??

  • Well, my LC (who is also DH's aunt) wants me to cut out every single dairy protein for 3 weeks. I tried it a few weeks ago, and DD's rash cleared up, but it came back again (I've been cheating because it's been so hard to go without dairy!). She insists that I need to cut it all out, but I'm getting so frustrated with having to cook every day and buy really expensive organic groceries that I'm on the verge of tears most days. I get a big drop in blood sugar when I don't eat every couple of hours, so I've been really emotional and crabby lately due to a lack of eating enough. I'm getting close to just throwing in the towel.

  • Many babies who have a reaction to cow's milk protien also have a reaction to soy.

Eat veggies with olive oil on them instead of butter.Grill/saute with olive oil instead of butter.

Snack on fruits or raw veggies dipped in hummus.

Cook chicken or turkey breast and have it sliced and ready to go to easily (and one handed) throw together a sandwich. Or eat leftovers from dinner.

Fill up on foods with whole grains- you'll stay fuller longer!

  • I substitute a lot. I like the almond milk by silk, fleishmanns unsalted margarine for butter, the tofutti brand of sour cream and cream cheese is good, but dairy free cheese sucks! I usually eat chicken, steak, hamburgers, crab, sloppy joes, tuna/egg/salad sandwiches, salads with chx and balsamic dressing. I eat a lot of veggies grilled with olive oil salt and pepper and then a side of potato salad or macaroni salad. Lots of fresh fruit. Ds is milk protein sensitive and I had to cut out all dairy; even the hidden stuff he had a reaction to. I am cutting it out as a preventative for my dd and will slowly add it in around 8-10 weeks. So far her poops have been great and I hope it stays that way! Gl it is hard in the beginning but gets easier!
