Trouble TTC

Update on my IUI on Saturday

IUI #2 was Saturday morning and I was so excited! Since it fell on a Saturday, that meant my DH could stay the whole time with me. When it came time for the procedure a male RE that works for the practice walk in. I hadn't thought about it too much but they only have one RE on call for the weekend so it wasn't my RE. I've never had a pap or ultrasound or anything from a male doctor let alone an insemination. If I had selected this RE myself I could have gotten over that fact and handled it better, but this just really caught me off guard. I'm a very modest person and I was already feeling very vulnerable having to have an IUI.

I was keeping it together and then he told us the post wash number. I was really hoping we'd finally see some improvement after being on the vitamins and clomid for 5 months. No. Our wash was only 2.76 M. (our first IUI was 4 M) I wanted to burst out in tears the moment he said it, but didn't because my DH was there and it would have made him feel terrible. Then he did the IUI which hurt like hell this time. After he walked out I just lost it. I felt physically awful, was really upset about it being a male dr doing an insemination, and the numbers were so low after trying everything possible that we can try. My DH was incredibly supportive which really helped calm me down. Later that evening I was still spotting which didn't happen last time but it has stopped now. I know I probably made it a bit harder on myself by tensing up for the IUI.

How could our numbers not be getting any better?! (not really a question, just  a vent) I swear I wanted to throw all the vitamins in the trash when we got home. I know they aren't a magic cure for MFI but it seems that everyone else reports at least some, if not significant, improvement after being on them awhile.  I really wanted to be excited and hopeful about this IUI especially since we have to take a break after this one, but now I just feel so defeated.

I'm sorry for this long rant today. I know many of you have male RE's, and like I said it was mostly a problem because of me thinking too much about the procedure we were actually doing and that a man (other than my husband) was having to do it. I've dealt with this now and know that its not the end of the world, it just really caught me off guard. Thanks for listening/reading.

Sorry your IUI was painful and you had a rough day. FX this is your cycle and try not to worry too much about the post wash #.

  • I'm here to help!  .....I'd like to think this may help you.

I, too, prefer female drs. and have a male RE.  My 1st IUI was with a female RE in the pratice.  I felt very comfortable with her, but since I usually get a little nervous prior to this type of exam, I have a muscle relaxant prescribed to take only 1 hour prior to the IUI or my regular physical.  It helps the drs. do their job, and helps me to relax.  (Out of my system in an hour.) I am a pretty private/modest person as well and get easily embarrassed at times with all of the particulars that need to be discussed at the appointments, even at this age, but......  It's getting SO MUCH easier to talk about CM and the like these days.  LOL

Just thought I'd tell you that I have my IUI #2 this past Saturday as well and have my beta set for May 20th.  Looks like we are around the same timing.  This IUI actually was more uncomfortable than the 1st and I like to think that this is it for us both!  Positive thoughts! Smile  There was a male RE on-call on Saturday that is not my regular RE so that was new for my husband and I as well.

Remember too that your husband may have varying SA each time he goes in.  This keeps happening my husband and he does not have MFI.  (I don't know if this helps or not....I hope it does.)

You can PM me if you want  to talk more!  =)

Thanks so much for the reply. I was hoping I wasn't going to come off as a big cry baby about it all.  This IF treatment process just wears you out sometimes. I will consider a muscle relaxer next time. And really I think it will help me just to call ahead if it falls on the weekend, and find out if it will be a male RE. That way I have time to process it before its one second prior to the procedure. Good luck to you too cycle buddy!! My beta is Friday May 17th. Fingers crossed we never have to worry about any of this again.

  • I am so sorry that the day didn't go as you envisioned! I do have a male RE, but I think that if I was in your position, not expecting a male to do the procedure then I would probably feel uncomfortable as well. I am so sorry about the low numbers as well. A past poster here only had about 500,000 on her IUI that got her pregnant right now! I really hope this is it for you. I hope your 2ww goes by fast!

Thanks girl. And yes I keep reminding myself about her all the time. When I see others post amazingly great post wash numbers I can start to feel very defeated, but I try to remind myself that this board does have several women who are dealing with consistently low counts also and not all of them had to move on the IVF.

PP is right that numbers flucuate all the time, even for non MFI'ers. While we have seen some improved counts...we also had IUI number 3 cancled due to low sperm. And one sample where his pre wash only 13mil and another that was 76mil. MFI is such a crap shoot.
As for a male RE do the insem, you got through it. I'm sorry it was so hard, but it's now behind you and you have a plan for if it might happen again. And it might be like other fears...you face them and it gets better.

FX for great news from you in Mid May!!

That's just it, our numbers don't really flucuate. They have all been low and we've had at least 7 SA's now. The highest pre wash we've ever seen was 13 million.  Yes there is some difference from our lowest count, but going up and down just a few million doesn't really matter too much when all the numbers are still well below 40 million or even the more modest 20 million mark.  I think I'm mostly discouraged because this is after we've been on treatment for 5 months. According to our urologist there really isn't anything else we can try.  Obviously I'm happy whenever we see any improvement even if it is small. I just keep hoping each time that this will be when we finally see a good sample. But yes I agree MFI is a crap shoot.
