Trouble TTC

PCOS and Weight Loss

I have been struggling to loss weight for months. I gained 30 lbs when I stopped BC. I completely changed my diet (lots more veggies, things are made from scratch, less eating out and no junk food in the house) and I have started exercising more consistently (we bought an elliptical). I have only lost 6 lbs in 3 months. I feel like I am stuck. I have PCOS and with that diagnosis I realized it might not be all my fault. I am taking Metformin and was told this could aide in my weight loss but I have not found that to be true yet.

Anyone have any tips? What has worked for you?

Re: PCOS and Weight Loss

  • I'm in the exact same boat as you! I gained 20 lbs. after stopping the pill and started Metformin as well. I have been slowly losing weight after I changed my eating habits (cut out white flour and sugar, added lots of veggies, lean protein, etc) but it isn't exactly falling off. I think it's hard with the holidays and everything though, so I'm going to work a lot harder with exercise now and hope to see more changes with increased effort. Have you had your thyroid checked? My doctor checked mine and it was low so I started medication for that as well. I've noticed a huge difference in the way I feel with the medication. I have so much more energy now! Good luck with your weight loss, I know it's really frustrating at times.

  • I've been off BC for about 2 years and had no weight fluctuation.  I had gained about 40 lbs in college and never really shed it.  I started running more this year and lost about 2 lbs.  Last spring I was put on Metformin as well.  At first, there was a little weight loss as my body struggled with being nauseous from the med.  Once we found the right dose (multiple increases over the summer) I did indeed drop about 30 lbs (still running mind you and some yoga).  I eat a vegetarian diet (have for the last 12 years).  My diet and exercise routines actually were the first clues that the doc had that I might be PCOS.

None of that is really what you're asking for.  Hang in there, the holidays toss LOTS of unhealthy food our way and even with our best attempts at being healthy we might not realize what we're eating.  The best thing I found was journalling what I eat and when I exercise.  I use FatSecret.com to record my diet progress.

     Best of luck!

  • I did have my thyroid checked and it looked fine. Though my energy level has never been normal and if I don't set an alarm I will sleep 10+ hours so I've always wondered about that. I've been considering removing white flour from my diet. We've been trying to replace pasta with other grains when possible or at least choose wheat or whole grain pasta. I already cut out most meats and my DH and I eat at least 2 vegetarian meals a week (we use relishrelish.com to plan our meals). I'm really trying and it's hard to work so hard and see no change. My BFF started using a website called nutrimirror a few months back and has lost 15 lbs. I am thinking of starting that but I will check out your website as well.

  • I haven't noticed much weight loss from the metformin/glumetza until recently when the RE upped my dosage to 2000 mg.  We started doing Wii Fit around the same time and I have lost 4 lbs in a week.  Not sure whether or not the trend will continue, but it was certainly nice to see a few lbs shed!  If you just recently started metformin, it might take a while to figure out what dosage works.  Good luck!
  • My RE told me that it is twice as hard for someone with PCOS to lose weight than a normal person. He said in order to lose weight I will need to diet and excersize at least 4 times a week while a normal person could probably get away with twice a week. I know that made me feel a bit discouraged but it does get at what your saying --- this is not all our fault!!

He basically told me that carbs are evil for people with PCOS. He said a good diet to follow is the ADA (American Diabetes Association) diet which can be easily found through google.

Good luck! Now that the holidays are over I too am joining the weight loss challenge!!
