I posted about this last week on the 12-24mo board, but long story short G was having really horrible diarrhea that came with no other symptoms and appeared overnight. We went back and forth with the Pedi about what could be causing it and decided to keep a food journal to see if it correlated with anything. Turns out, he was having episodes about 30-60 minutes after consuming milk. We decided to cut dairy from his diet and replace his milk with Lactaid. We started this on Friday and have seen 100% improvement which is awesome. But is it normal for lactose intolerance to develop out of the blue like that? Maybe we overlooked minor symptoms along the way, but the kid loves milk, cheese, yogurt, etc. and has never had an issue until two weeks ago. Has anyone else experienced this?
Re: Out of the Blue Lactose Intolerance?
Slightly different, but I developed lactose intolerance at age 14, out of nowhere. I had an allergy to milk as a baby that took my parents and pedi ages to figure out (and my mom still hasn't forgiven me for making her give up cheese while she bf'ed me), but it went away when I was a year or two old. I LOVED dairy products while I was a kid, and then as a teenager it took us a while to piece it together that I kept getting sick after having a big glass of milk or bowl of ice cream or whatever.
Some dairy items are worse than others for lots of people who are lactose intolerant. And there seems to be a threshold for how much some people can handle before it becomes a problem (for example, I can have one slice of pizza no problem but any more than that and I better take Lactaid first).
Glad you figured out what G's issue was! Good luck dealing with it. (Oh, and I was told that yogurt is different than other dairy items for lactose intolerance; I've never had a problem with having yogurt or frozen yogurt, so maybe G can still enjoy his yogurt.)

This is what I was going to say. I'm 24 and within the past 6 months or so I've been dealing with lactose intolerance issues. I've never liked milk but icecream, cream cheese etc. starting giving me problems recently. I'm sorry your LO is dealing with this
Thank you all for the advice and feedback - I really appreciate it! I think you're right in that there were probably signs in the past, but they were minor enough that we associated them with other things until it got so bad that it became impossible to miss.
I'm going to keep him away from lactose for the next few weeks and then try yogurt and see how he reacts. He had a yogurt a week or so ago and threw it up immediately, but that might have been because of the milk he had beforehand.
It probably was hard to tell too because over the winter kids get sick and rashy and funky anyway so the signs may not have been obvious.
