Breastfeeding

Anyone have success pumping after flange size change?

I think my flanges are too small (according to the manufacturer's illustrations on how they should properly fit) and I've always had trouble pumping.

I can pump my smaller breast when it is engorged or very full but not when it is just normal. I can not get but drops out of my larger breast no matter how full or empty it is. I have medium sized flanges that came with my PISA. I think I need to upgrade to the next size up but I wanted to hear some success stories before I made the purchase.

  • I had to go to the 27's on my Medela, and they helped, but I still get a crappy yield when pumping...I need to produce 12oz a day while at work...I am lucky if I can get 8-9 oz in 4 20m pumps sessions....and it hurts my boobs

  • I had to get smaller flanges. I can remember how much if any with the standard flanges. I can pump a ton with the smaller 24 mm flanges.

FYI, flange size depends on your nipple size, not your breast size.

  • I would def. try the other pump flanges. For me, size was important - too small or too big decreased production.

@Theresat858 When I looked at the box of the larger flange at target it has an illustration showing how to tell if the flange was too big or too small. It looked as though my current flanges were too small. Did you ever consult similar illustrations? If so were they accurate?

  • How can I tell if my flange size is correct?

  • Definitely makes a difference. When my LO was in the NICU the LC helped me get the right size and in the beginning I had to go up to the 27mm on one side and 30mm on the other. Once i switched it was much more comfortable and i had better output. I am now using the 27 on both so they can change.
  • Absolutely made a difference for me. I was getting milk with the 24s but oh we're my nipples hurting. I switched to the 27s and I haven't had pain since. Plus it helped the amount of oz I get at each pumping
  • Changing my flanges made a huge difference for me.  It upped my out put by 4-5 oz every day without changing anything else.  I went down in size even though I have large breasts.  I followed the chart.
