At what age did you stop using sippy cups?

When did you stop using sippy cups? did you buy special open cups?

  • DD can use a regular cup, but she still uses a sippy. She drops her cups all of the time, and I don't want to deal with a mess.

    This, for us too.

  • A can use a regular cup, as well, but he takes a couple sips and dumps it on purpose, so he still uses a sippy.

This for us too. He always has a sippy of water around but we give him a regular cup with milk at dinner or a cup of juice when we have it.
  • We are still using straw sippy cups. We have plastic open cups, from ikea, that we sometimes use at meals. Ds1 is very good with an open cup, but sometimes he'll play with it. My second son is good with drinking, but he dumps it out and asks for more.
  • Same as pp, we still use straw cups mostly.  He can use an open cup, but the spills aren't worth my sanity.  We use the take n toss straw kind, which still spill, but not as badly.

We travel lots.  Summer and Leah are seven and five.  I give them contigo cups (a sippy cup with a button) for when we travel to keep the mess contained.  I use a contigo water bottle and their cups look like mine.
  • Around 2.5 years we started using small plastic open cups. Now at just over 3 years he still gets sippy cups, usually the straw kind, but only for his water. That way he can have it all day and carry it all over the house and i don't worry about spills.

  • I'm glad to read this post.  DD still gets sippy cups.  At breakfast and dinner if she gets a drink it's in a regular cup but the rest of the time it's all sippys.

  • DD1 always uses an open cup at the table, starting a few months before she turned 3. We use Take and Toss sippies for her milk at bedtime, and a sport top water bottle for water when we travel, but 99% of the time it's open cups. We have the Munchkin plastic cups, they are a perfect size for little hands.

  • DD2 will be 3 in July. She was able to use a regular cup since she was a little under 2. However, as soon as I got pg, she started insisting that she wanted to use "baby" cups, aka sippy cups.

  • We transitioned to an open cup at home around 2 but daycare still requires a sippy cup so he uses a straw cup while at school.

  • DS started using an open cup at about 20 months. After that, we always used them, except when he's on the move - for that we use straw cups.
  • Ds stopped using a sippy cup right around his second birthday. He drinks bottled water when were out and about.

dd is still on a sippy. I don't see us being able to stop anytime soon. We practice wit an open cup and shell drink some and pour the rest on the table. Lol

lim honestly surprised that so many kids use sippies. I was getting concerned about dd.

We still use straw sippy cups for school and traveling.  Open cup with all meals though and at home.   She started showing an interest right before her second birthday and had it mastered within a few days.  She very rarely spills.

He uses an open cup with meals and snacks at the dinner table.  But he uses the take and toss straw sippy for his wake-up and bedtime milk (which we do while reading books in a cushy chair).

eta - for open cups, we bought cheap half-sized ones.  I think they're munchkin brand.  You can find them at Target, Babies R Us, etc.

DS will get a sippy cup or water bottle if he's playing because he gets too distracted.

We switched to mostly a regular cup about 2. We got the plastic ones from ikea.

  • my kids never really liked sippies but we used/use straw cups. we phased them out for milk after 18 months b/c at daycare they started with open cups at 18months. by 2 we only used straw cups for in the car or out & about and only for water. milk was only in an open cup. We started w/ little dixie cups & water til they got better at it and with milk just didnt put much in at a time. Our go to cups since age 2 have been these colorful plastic ones from the kids section at ikea, they're great.
  • She uses straw cups or sippy cups still. She will take a sip of water out of an open cup and then instantly pour the rest of it. I only give her a dixie cup of barely any water when we brush her teeth because of this. There is no way we could trust her with an open cup.

She also hates, hates, the training open cups as well.

  • We stopped using sippy cups at home at around 2.5.  We bought small plastic cups for DD.  At 3, we switched to our regular glass cups unless we're out - she also has a straw thermos.
  • We stopped sippies at 2, and we just use regular cups. She has spills every now and again, but that's only if she is trying to get down from her chair with the cup, and it spills all over herself. It's okay with me though, I worry about sippy cups affecting her teeth.
