New to all of this

Hi, all. I just finished my first IEP meeting for my son. He is 4 and we just finished all the evals for SN through Child Find in SC.
I have been lurking here since this all started with a referral for a speech evals. He is qualified for services for adaptive and social and emotional delay. He also has slight hearing loss after tubes.
I am having an issue processing it emotionally. No parent wants to hear their precious child has a delay or problem.
How do you handle it? Is there anyone else with these delays on here?

Re: New to all of this

  • My son has developmental delays due to speech delay which is due to his diagnosis of SPD (sensory processing disorder). He has both expressive and receptive speech delays and has had ST for about a year. He will be 3 yrs in June.  I actually wasn't devestated or anything, because I see kids that are far more delayed and have far many more issues than my son does.  I take it all in stride, one day at a time.  You will have good days and bad days. Once you start seeing improvements you will feel differently.  A year ago I thought to myself, oh my, I will never make it thru this.  But I started seeing improvements and then I got excited and now I feel different.  I see a really good future for my son and I am excited.  So hang in there. If I could give you a piece of advice, be diligent in getting your LO therapies and take help when you can get it. Good luck and post often with questions or just needing a hug or to vent.

  • My daughter now 5.5 finishing up preschool at parish school & ec classroom has an IEP.   Man it's tough that first conference in October at 3 when I was told this is something wrong.   We knew about her speech delays but not her social, adaptive, fine motor, sensory integration issues.   We have been on a journey two months later came IEP.  That was tough.  I blamed myself.  Well you can't change anything.  But no diagnosis.  That spring I began noticing more the attention issues were clear but at home it was getting difficult maybe it's bc I had a 2 year old talking developing just as much as his near 4.5 sister.  I starting reading I know she wasn't autistic but I was sure she would have meltdowns continuing ramped up.  I knew probably ADHD diagnosis would come in kindergarten I was so uneducated.  The teacher maybe a reference that she was similar to a kid in her class that has spd.  Had no idea about this did reading this was my kid heck this was me.  Until about 3 or 4th grade had a rough time in school.  I went to dr I think she has this insisted so finally he referred me to developmental ped and OT.  OT first yep spd modulation disorder began therapy for sensory integration.   Then a few more months ADHD possibly a learning disability only time will tell.  Don't let this get you down be your child's best advocate find out what's going on now.  Do everything you can.  That's what I've become I was parenting the wrong way.  I didn't understand the tantrums for wearing the same shirt now I know I need to wash new clothes 5-10 times before shell wear against her skin.  That girl is now doing great.  They suspect by the end of kindergarten shell probably be near caught up.  It's hard somedays but you know that kid best and once you get the full picture it helps more than you know.  And remember childhood is a journey not a race.  And there were days I would cry bc I didn't know how to deal or how to fix it.  It has helped me as a parent so much.
