My coworker made fun of me because I shop locally. She called me a homebody because I don't leave my small town.
I buy my jewelry at our local jeweler's store which does limit my selection. I buy my paint from the mom and pop hardware store. We bought furniture from a local store vs. the big warehouse shops in the big cities. Other things too, like using renting tuxes from a shop in town vs. Men's Wearhouse.
I don't do that because I'm afraid to leave my town and drive "to the city", I do it to support local business.
Re: Supporting local business
Yay! I agree. I do shop at big box stores, but I prefer independent/local businesses and support them as much as I can. I don't think it has anything to do with being a homebody - it has everything to do with supporting your community and pushing back against corporatism, even if it means that you spend a little bit more sometimes.
I'm also a HUGE proponent of supporting local agriculture and farms and buying your food locally and regionally, from farmers markets, local butchers and bakeries and fruit stands and dairies.
Yes! I love supporting local business and I'll spend a little more to do it. The personalized service you get more than makes up for the price difference. We paid slightly more for our washer and dryer but they delivered and set it up for free and said if we had a problem to just call. (oh and they told me about Jesus, now the guys from home depot just don't do that, lol )
When we redid our house in Illinois I was so happy that we got most of what we needed from local flooring and appliance stores.
We never realized how important it was until we lived in a city that has a big push to keep business local. They have an eclectic bunch of great stores to show for it.
LOL @ they told me about Jesus!
When we moved into our new house we used a local floor company, cabinet maker, and got a bunch of framing done at the local glass repair shop!
I say shop where you like. If you like how you are treated in small, local stores, then give them your business.
I live in a city and prefer shopping at the big box stores. I don't want tons of service and like everything in one place. Plus, being in the land of Target, I know tons of people who work there and other large companies and no one that work at local shops. So to me, shopping at Target actually supports more people that I know, but that is not why I shop there.
I think your friend's comment is kind of rude, depending on her tone. You should continue to spend your money where you want.
