ETA: WTF... I'm not anti-gun, but why would a child need to own one, how would it be ok to not lock it up, and how did the family not know it was loaded?? In another story the coroner was like "it's just one of those freak accidents"... um, no, it's not...
Re: Who gives a 5 yo a gun for his bday? (death mentioned)
"It's just one of those nightmares -- a quick thing that happens when you turn your back."
Um no. Your kid eating cat poop is one of those things that happen. Not picking up a loaded, unlocked weapon and killing his little sister.
I know so many responsible gun owners. I own guns (I don't own ammo, they're decorative pieces, but I do own them). This just makes me so angry. If you're going to own firearms, you have to be responsible about their keeping and educating your kids about them--one or the other doesn't cut it.
And FFS, it had to have been just sitting around loaded for the mom to step out for "a minute" and this to happen. It's not like the kid picked the ammo safe, loaded the weapon, and managed to do this. It's akin to leaving knives sitting around on the floor or letting the lawn mower run unattended on a slope next to the kiddie pool.
This!! We own guns and ammo, but it is locked in a gun safe that DH can't even manage to get in. DS will be taught about gun safety and all before getting a gun and once he does have a gun if his own it will be locked up. I agree the gun should have been locked up and empty until ready for adult supervised shooting.
Yeah, the gun was marketed to children, with a choice of brightly colored buttstocks to choose from, and called a "cricket" as if it were a harmless toy... something that has the power to kill should not be named after a harmless insect. That poor 5 year old will probably feel guilty about this for the rest of his life while it's all his parents' fault. The family "didn't know the gun was loaded"... It's your Fing responsibility to know the gun is unloaded and locked in an appropriate safe. The only intro kids need to guns at this age is to learn that they aren't toys...
"The Crickett website features three different .22-caliber rifle models for kids, with shoulder stock colors ranging from pink to red, white and blue swirls. "My first rifle" is the company's slogan."
WTF
THIS. If I think about all of the toys that are considered age appropriate for a 5 year old, "gun" is not on my list. And BS on accident - that's negligence. Make SURE it's not loaded, make SURE it's locked up.
This whole thing makes me feel extremely sick to my stomach. For one, I hate that there is a company marketing guns to children. I dislike the coroner's comment. I really dislike that the parents didn't know it was loaded (shouldn't you always know whether a gun is loaded or not if it is in your house?).
This is why we won't ever have a gun in the house. I can't imagine the psychological impact this incident has on the child, on the family, etc.
