Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Baby too loud!

Okay, here's an odd problem.  My baby is pretty vocal, but when we are out in public, at a grocery store or a restaurant, he yells!  He's not crying or in a bad mood, he just seems like he wants to be heard.  I talk to him to let him know I'm listening to him or try to shush him a little if we're in a restaurant but I don't really know what the right move is here.  He's happy when he does it so I don't think he needs soothing and I think it's still kind of early to teach him polite behavior in public, right?  Any suggestions how to keep him from annoying other people without losing his love of "chatting"?

  • I don't see the problem. Babies have to learn to vocalize, even in public.

  • LOL my daughter does this too.  It's more like yelling "BAAA" at the top of her lungs.  I just keep talking to her normally...she's a baby and it's expected.  I don't care what people think.  I just keep saying like "oh yeah?  tell me more" in my regular tone.

  • I agree with trying to keep him in kid-friendly public places, so if he does make noise it won't be a big deal. Besides the library, we rarely take him places where it would be unacceptable. My kid never takes a paci so we don't have a "mute button" for his loud outbursts.  Kids are noisy, obnoxious, spirited little creatures. No reason to be embarrassed or upset about your kid making noise, because it only gets worse once they start talking.

Honestly as long as your in a kid friendly atmosphere I don't really see an issue with it.  Babies are going to make noise.  If you had your son screaming in a fine dining restaurant, or a movie theatre or library, yes I would side eye that.  A park, grocery store, family diner, eh it wouldn't bother me. Your LO is an infant and is going to make noise, he's making noise when happy, I personally wouldn't worry about it.  It's not like he's a toddler you can teach inside voice and outside voice to.
