Parenting after a Loss

Infant Car Seat Question

When did you transition your LO to a regular convertible car seat?  DS is just shy of 8 months and he's already 29 inches tall but only 18.5lbs.  The infant car seat specs say its ok up to 30 inches and 30lbs.  I love the convenience of the infant car seat clipping right into the stroller, especially when DS falls asleep on the way somewhere, but his feet hang off and I don't want it to become a safety issue.  I guess my concern is he's tall but thin and even though he's almost at the maximum height he's still nowhere near the maximum weight.  What made you switch to the convertible seat with your LO?  I just want to make sure we are doing what is the safest option for him.

Re: Infant Car Seat Question

  • We flipped him around 9.5m.  I waited until the last possible minute as we both loved the bucket.  He HATED his convertible for quite a while.  I did, too.  It's the Graco MyRide 65 and is a PITA in several ways (at least RFing, it is; I haven't tried it FFing).  I thought him sitting higher would be a plus for him, but it wasn't.

It's pretty common to outgrow carseats by height before weight.  Height is more important as it has to do with head and neck support.  So, once he's too tall, you really need to switch him.

  • I just got a convertible car seat two weeks ago.  At 20 lbs LO was just too heavy to lug in and out of daycare in the infant seat, and because I never know if DH or I will be picking him up from daycare we didn't have a choice.  I was going to spend the money on the Britax Boulevard, but ended up really liking the Graco MySize70 (plus the price is awesome).  It has worked out really well, no regrets.  We bought two but for now we still use the infant seat in DH's car.  That way if we go out to eat and LO is sleepy we can carry him in.

  • We switched at 8 months because he HATED his infant seat.  He used to trip out in the car, I never went anywhere with him b/c of it.  Finally we just switched to a RF convertible seat b/c he could sit up on his own and had good torso control, and he could crawl so I knew he was stable enough to be that upright.  The pedi agreed.  He now loves the car.

I also just couldn't carry that heavy seat all over, I thought my arm was going to fall off.  Though, now I miss being able to let him sleep when he falls asleep in there :/

  • Ours went up to 30 inches and a certain number of pounds, I dont remember how many. Pretty much, they will always max out on height before weight. I transitioned DD when DS was born and was going to use it. She was 16m, 29in and around 17lbs.

Since your LO only has an inch to go, I'd start looking around now for a good deal on a carseat you want.

I'm starting to research carseats right now for DS (7.5m). Probably switch him in a month or so.

  • I think I put the convertible seat in my car at around 8 or 9 months only because I was unable to carry him in the infant carrier when I picked him up from daycare so DH used the carrier for his car until DS outgrew it and we put the second convertible seat in DH's car.

  • We switched him around 6m.  He was an inch short of the max height (you're supposed to move them out when they are an inch from the top of the carseat) and he was getting really pissy when we were driving when he used to be happy about it.  One day we were driving and I noticed he stopped fussing when we went up a big hill (where he could see out the back window).  We made the switch that weekend and he's been fine since (rear facing in a convertible, still).

  • You could switch to a convertible but keep him rear-facing (the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends this until age two, now). I found this, it might be helpful!

  • C was 6 months. He was getting to heavy to carry in his infant seat which was our biggest pro to the bucket. He was starting to hate being in it too which was really weird for him. He loved the switch and is still RF in it

  • I waited until I was confident in DS's sitting up abilities so that he could sit in the grocery cart on his own. I think we finally switched him around 7 months. He was far from the weight limits, but getting too heavy to lug around.
