STM: Diaper Recs

My cousin and I got together on Sunday with my sisters (each have 2+ kids) on Sunday to start our registry. Both my cousin and I are thinking about doing the G cloth diapers but upon further research we are really not sure if we can commit to the additional laundry while working full time; we're also not sure how our nanny (looking to nanny share) is going to feel about watching 2 kids who cloth diaper. Also, i'm getting strong opposition from my hubby and my mom (both of whom will be home 1 day/week with the baby when we aren't nanny sharing.

Our main reasons for wanting to use cloth are the financial savings (we'd register for the pieces you reuse and purchase the inserts), we've heard they're much better at preventing diaper rashes, etc., no harsh chemicals and the eco friendly side of it. I have a friend who lives by the cloth diapers but she works from home. My cousin calculated that the bundle for the inserts is $52/mo for 160 inserts which especially for a newborn I don't expect to be enough.

I use Honest Co. cleaning products and know they have diaper bundles ... 320 diapers plus 5 packs of wipes at $79/month. This appears more cost effective than cloth inserts (and also has some similar benefits). I am curious if any STMs use these and can speak to their absorbency levels. I am worried they won't hold for overnights, etc. We are proposing for our sisters to trial them for us but aren't sure if they'll be in to it.

I'd love ANY input from STM on cloth v. traditional diapers, the financial side of diapering, etc. We are going to be on a tight budget when

  • I used gdiapers  with my son when  i started using cloth and i didn't like them.  They fit weird and made his legs red. And they are  actually more expensive. I like pocket diapers because they  are really easy to use  and only like $6 dollars each if  but the  ones. Washing cloth isn't that hard.  you just  throw them in a hot wash and extra cold rinse and that's it.

but if you decide you  dont want to do cloth, i liked kroger brand chlorine free or earths best when i used disposables.

  • This question has been asked a lot on here lately... did you ask this already?  I swear, someone has asked almost the exact same thing!  You might see some good answers if you look around and I also think it gets asked daily on the cloth diapering board, so you might want to lurk around over there.  :)

I CDd DD and we used disposables occasionally for trips and stuff.  Both had good sides and bad sides.  I really liked CDing, and other people (especially a nanny, who you pay) will come around to it.  Especially if you have more modern diapers like Bum Genius or something.  They essentially change just like disposables except for the extra laundry, which would be your job.  We tried gDiapers and I wouldn't recommend that brand, we did not have good luck with it.  If you want to check out other hybrids, I would look into Grovia or Flip diapers.  Good luck!

  • I did not cloth diaper, but a friend of mine did. However, for her, it was not a situation where she stuck when one over the other. She cloth diapered when it was convenient and used disposables when it wasn't. You could stock your nanny with disposables and make sure you have some at home for those who watch the baby, and when you're around, use the cloth. I really don't know what's worth it, but the biggest advice that has comforted me is do what is convenient and affordable. Always leave yourself options. Cloth diaper when you can and use disposables when necessary. Also, if you are having a baby shower, register and ask for diapers. We got enough diapers that we still have A LOT of leftover size 1's that we'll use for this LO. GL!

You know, I do to.  But for some reason, I don't mind CD laundry as much.  I will putt off and putt off our regular laundry but I always do my CD laundry twice a week (generally Sunday and Wednesday).  It's really not that bad.

OP...if you are looking to save money, CDs are the way to go.  I don't have any g diapers, but there are plenty of options out there.  I recommend doing a trial or looking online for used diapers.  You can also look at JBF if you have one near you.  There are tons of options!  As someone who has done both sposies and cloth, I much prefer cloth for so many reasons.

  • While I know there are benefits to cloth diapering, I just really don't want to deal with it.  I used Pampers with my first child and will most likely use them with this baby as well.  I LOVED the Pampers swaddlers while she was little and moved her into the Pampers Cruisers when she grew out of the swaddlers (I think they only go to Stage 2 if memory serves me correctly).

For those who do cloth diaper, more power to you.  My husband's grandmother will most likely be keeping our baby every day and I don't want to give her any extra work to do with worrying about leaks or dealing with cleaning/bagging laundry.

  • I cloth diapered with my last one and loved it. You save so much money! I really only ended up doing maybe 1-2 extra loads of laundry a week. Our daycare provider wouldn't deal with them, so she was in disposables there and cloth at home. But I plan on doing it with this one and wont have to deal with daycare since I am SAHM now. I like the BumGenius AOI, but a lot of my new ones are just covers. A girl friend of mine makes them and I've got about 10-12 newborns stocked up so far. I would say you initial investment can be as little as a couple hundred bucks on up to about $500. You can find a lot of great deals on Craigslist or even eBay. It really isn't as bad as everyone thinks it is.

  • I HATE gdiapers. They were not good for us. We use flips and others. If you haven't looked into flips I would suggest it.

It's really like three extra loads of laundry a week. They are really not that much work. They will be no more work for your nanny, she'll have to change diapers anyway.
