XP: Breast Pump Covered - Now what?

Big SmileBig SmileBig Smile

I just got super awesome news from my insurance company that a double electric breast pump is covered for each birth with a perscription from my Dr. from an in-network durable medical equipment supplier at 100%.

Ok, so other than that, the representative couldn't really tell me much else. She did say that she believes it is an electric pump that is covered, but to check with the supplier to be sure.

So, when I call the durable medical equipment supplier, what should I ask? Obviously, what type of pump is covered, but any other "perks" I should ask about?

I've heard from other mothers about getting accessories (breast pads, bottles, milk storage bags, nipple cream, etc.) covered. Has this been others' experience? If so, can someone give me a list of those things that I should specifically ask about?

Anything else I'm forgetting?

  • Just want to say I am completely jealous.  All my insurance covers is a manuel pump- which I'll still get cause who knows when it may come in handy :-)

  • I just got mine in the mail from my insurance company this week. It's a doubleelectric Amida brand. It came with 150 free milk storage bags and I can get more every 90 days. I just need to call and let them know when I'm running low. This was a Caremark thing through blue Cross Blue Shield Federal, but I get the feeling it might apply to all insurance companies this year because of a Federal ruling of some kind.
  • Oh awesome, I also have my pump covered through insurance, up to 300, I'll have to check this out!

just FYI, manual pumps are actually quite awesome. I tried several different electrics and could never let down for them. So our pedi suggested the medela manual. It was 30 bucks and worth every penny. I could pump 10 oz in 15 minutes and used it several times a day. Plus they are super easy to clean.

  • i used my manual for date nights. no sense in carrying a big double electric pump everywhere, when we were really only missing one feeding, occasionally.
