Babies: 0 - 3 Months

About how many oz.'s should a 1 month old eat?

So I pumped for the first time ever today because I want to start a stash for when i go back to work and I want to get DS used to a bottle. Before today, I had no idea how many oz's he was getting. I got 3 oz from one side and 2 oz from the other. After pumping, I decided to give him a bottle with 3 oz's in it and put the 2 oz's in the fridge incase he wanted it. I figured 3 oz's would be enough. He was still hungry after the 3 oz. so I gave him the other 2 ozs and he downed it. Is 5 oz's a lot for a 1 month old? Thats a lot of milk in one day, if he really is getting 5 oz's every 2-3 hours. What do you think?

  • My twins (4 weeks) are eating 4 oz. I think 5 oz is fine......DS1 took 5 at 1 month and continued to take 5 until he was drinking WCM.

  • I think that would probably be a lot if it was formula, but not breast milk. When I was pumping and supplementing with formula, he would drink 2 to 3 oz of formula, but if I was giving him breast milk, he would take 4 to 5 oz easy. I could be completely wrong, but that's my experience with it.

Maybe it has something to do with how much foremilk and hind milk baby is getting? Just a thought.

  • That does seem high to me, but I guess it's possible. Were you using the slowest flow nipple? Did he burp after the first bottle? Tuesday will actually be the first day DS2 takes a bottle for a feed so I'll be interested to see how much he takes. DS1 was only taking 2.5-3 oz. at a time at 6 weeks, and he didn't get to 5 oz. until he was about 5 months old.

DS has been taking 45ox of formula since 4 weeks. Sometimes more if he's going through a growth spurt.

  • Mine was eating 4-5oz from a bottle at six weeks, so I'm sure it's fine.  They know when to stop.  Unless he is spitting it all back up, I say let him eat as much as he wants.

  • At 5 weeks, my LO is taking 3 to 4 ounces every 2 to 3 hours. Sometimes he'll have 2 ounces every 1.5 hours. However, there have been a few times over the last week or two where he's eaten 5 ounces at once or 6 ounces over the period of an hour. We were concerned at first but it's not something he's continued doing for every feed. He's a growing boy so we give him what his body says it needs!

  • My 8.5 week old is eating like 2 to 3. She is not a big eater and doesn't take more unless she is hungry.
I have heard a lot or other people say 4 at a month so I'm sure he is fine!

  • dd eats 4.5 oz every three hours.  about once a day, she'll only eat 3.5 oz.  sometimes she'll also skip one of the night time feedings (since i feed on demand overnight).  i'm glad you asked this though, since she often downs the 4.5 oz, and i was thinking of offering her 5 oz.  now i have an idea of what others are doing.
