Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Super picky eating

My 12 month old is and has always been very picky.  He won't eat anything resembling a veggie and is seemingly phobic of protein.  Pretty much all he likes is toast so I put anything possible on it.  I even pureed chicken and spread it on there but he wouldn't eat more than 2 bites.

He's also dairy/soy allergic so that cuts way down on our options.  Anyone else struggling with this or already have it overcome?

  • DS is super picky as well. He would eat fruit and carbs all day long, but protein and veggies are instantly spit out or tossed from the high chair :(

I sneak veggies in right now. I make fruit smoothies with a handful of spinach tossed in them, "toddler muffins" -google for plenty of recipes, and I recently pureed some butternut squash and mixed it in with pasta sauce and froze it in the baby bullet freezer trays. He loves pasta so now he gets his special veggie sauce with it instead of whatever we're having. I puree veggies into meatballs that I keep in the freezer, sometimes he'll eat meat if it's covered in marinara.

It's hard and it bums me out because DH and I are very healthy eaters. I try to remember that the foods he does  eat are healthy and that helps me relax more about what his diet is missing.

  • DS is 16 months today and has been on a food strike for a week plus. This started the day after his well baby appt when we found out he had only gained 8.5 oz in 3 months and needed to increase his calories he's 1.53 for weight. He also doesn't drink much and won't drink Pediasure. Feeding is an epic battle right now. I have never been so stressed.

  • Does he do things on toast?  Like eggs, hummus, peanut butter?  Not eating meat isn't the end of the world, because there are other proteins out there.  And they all are picky eaters at this age, so I'm sure it will eventually pass.  My son went through a good 4-6 weeks where he didn't eat any meat.  He ate a lot of beans during that time period!
