Thanks to everyone who has given input on the two names we are deciding between. We definitely want something less common, classic, and not trendy. I think our other contender, Juliana, has all of those qualities. But I'm having a hard time figuring out exactly how popular Alayna is, since it has multiple spellings. I've checked the social security census data and none of the spellings of the name are in the too 100. But since there are multiple spellings then if you were to group all of the different spellings together the name is probably pretty common... Right?
Sorry I know I'm an over-thinker, but how common do you think the name Alayna/Alaina is? We'd call her Laney or Layna most of the time... How common is that?
Re: How popular is "Alaina/Alayna/Elena"?
According to Name Nerds, there were 7,362 girls named Alaina/Elena/Alayna, etc. born in 2011, making it the #48 name in the country. Lainey/Laney as a given name adds another 1,597 girls to the total, meaning that Alainas and Laineys combined would rank around #32.
Juliana/Julianna/Giuliana comes in at #67.

Growing up in Boston I didn't come across many Girls with the name Alaina/ Alana/ Elena. I always liked Alaina and fully intend on naming my daughter Alaina, but here in North Carolina I've come across a few Elina/ Alayna/ Alayna.
If you like the name you should go for it!
