Work Vs. School?

Hello Ladies,

So I have a question for all of you.. I mostly lurk on this board but last week I introduced myself, and I currently work 3 jobs and have a 4.5 DS.. Before I got my BFP I completed my FAFSA and was going to go back to school this fall when my DS started school. My dream career is in the criminal justice field which is what I would be attending school for.  Since I got the BFP I have had mixed feelings on whether or not I should wait, I currently work 32 hours as a leasing consultant, and get benefits, which I obviously need being pregnant...

So i guess long story short, should I start school part time, wait completely, or go back full time like planned and just try to qualify for state pregnancy medical?  Really confused on what the best choice is..

 TIA!!

Re: Work Vs. School?

  • I'm really not familiar with this situation since DH and I have always had benefits at our jobs, if one of us lost them, the other would carry us.  If you don't qualify for benefits under anyone else I'd figure out if you qualify for the state pregnancy medical  before you do anything.  If you do, I guess go with your plan of being in school full time, assuming you can afford to do that an have child care.  If that's not an option, you have to decide what's important to you.  I can't get enough time w/ my kids.  I did take about 3 grad courses for a supervisor certificate, but I did it online so it wasn't too bad.  You have to figure out how much time you'd be giving up with your kids and if it's worth it to you.  How guaranteed do you think a degree in criminal justice will be.  Have you also figured out how you and your LOs will be covered after your pregnancy?

  • I accidentally got pregnant with DD1 just before my third year of law school. It was a miracle I graduated. I was already sick, but happily married and pro life, so I finished my JD and had a baby too. I am so glad that I am done with school. It was so tough once DD1 was born -- seven weeks before graduation. Insurance was not an issue because I never carried it. DH always did that. You say you want to go into criminal justice What do you want to do? It is not a good time to go to law school. The economy is too bad. I also do not recommend a pregnancy 1L year. There is no way to know how you will handle the pressure.
  • I would definitely not quit your job! It's up to you if you think you can handle part time classes in addition to working while pregnant.

  • I just finished grad school last month, while working full time in an internship, raising a one and two year old, and I'm 8 months pregnant. I'm a big fan of making long term plans then working hard for them.

However, I can't imagine giving up a job with benefits while you are responsible for supporting a family.
