LO screams while trying to burp

LO is 12 weeks and has always been easy to burp and has had the loudest beer burps! I have been burping her once mid bottle and then at the end of the bottle (I EP so she gets breastmilk no formula).  This last week however, every time I try to burp her mid bottle, she ends up screaming for the bottle.  Sometimes she will burp while she is screaming, other times after trying for a minute or two I give up and give her the bottle to calm her back down.  She has never spit up much but when she really starts throwing a fit, she will spit up all over.  I have tried to just burp her at the end of her bottle when she is content but it seems that this makes her gassy and then she gets fussy and uncomfortable from the gas.

Has anyone else experienced a LO that screams while being burped?  Suggestions on what to do?

Re: LO screams while trying to burp

  • I have no idea. Maybe try burping 3/4 of the way so she's fuller? I have yet to introduce a bottle, so, I'm no help...

  • E does this. I try to burp him for a little while but if he doesn't after a couple minutes I go back to feeding him. But his pissed off I'm not done yet face cracks me up.

  • I wish I had a suggestion! I breastfeed, and my daughter gets bottled of breast milk when I'm at work. Doesn't matter if it's a bottle or at the breast, she screams bloody murder if you try to burp her when she's still hungry. She's mostly a very pleasant baby, but she gets quite the temper when food is involved!!

  • We burp every 2 oz and a good chunk of time LO screams for the first burp. I've always interpreted it as him still being hungry and mad about taking the bottle out. If he won't burp within a minute or so, I give him another half oz and try again. Usually he's got enough in his belly by then that he chills out enough to burp

Same here! And it's so hard not to laugh at how angry they get, lol.
  • Haha! I'm glad DS isn't the only one that does this. He will make this pitiful cry like, "I am a starving orphan, why are you taking my food??!!" He doesn't do it every bottle, but he did it to my poor mother who was babysitting last night. Luckily I was still there so I was like, "Oh that, he does it to us too - don't take it personally!"

  • Mine does this at the boob. What has helped me is I get up and walk around while I burp him. It distracts him enough that he stops screaming and relaxes enough to burp. It's kind of a pain to have to stand up and walk around to burp him but its better then a gassy baby later.

  • DS does this too, he screams if we stop to burp, it's as if we starve him... and then he sorta attacks the bottle nipple when we give the bottle back, he's so impatient! It's kinda funny but I wonder if he is going to have an impatient personality.  On the other hand, it's nice to know when I need to up the ounces if he is not satisfied at the end of a bottle
