June 2013 Moms

this is such a 1st tri question. sorry. :)

Is aspartame a no-no?

I've been craving soda. And I know some regular soda in moderation isn't bad for you, but I really wish I could drink Pepsi Next instead and cut down on the calories. Should I just have the regular stuff and get over it, or is Pepsi Next ok?

  • It's funny because I don't usually drink artificial sweeteners at all, but I also don't drink soda that much so I don't worry about the calories. I don't know why I'm craving it all of the sudden, lol.

  • If you're really craving the Pepsi Next for the taste of that versus regular, I say it won't hurt.  I have personally craved soda a few times this pregnancy and avoided diet.  I wouldn't be worried about the extra calories -- unless you're drinking a ton of it, what's 200 extra calories in one day?

  • The past month I've been craving root beer and I typically never, ever drink or desire pop. I think that regular pop is better than diet as diet has the artificial sweeteners in it.

  • My dr says its now considered safe during pregnancy. I say it's fine.

I just asked my doc about this a couple of weeks ago!

She said a little aspartame won't kill you but she recommends sticking to splenda or stevia if you need to use artificial sweeteners (I have GD which is why it came up).

  • Alright, regular soda it is. That's ok, I like the taste better anyway. ;)

  • I drink diet coke all the time. You'd really have to consume a LOT of aspartame for it to cause any kind of problem, but then again, I'm a very laid back mama.
  • I have no guilt if I want something that contains aspartame. In moderation of course. Actually I think I will have a coke zero cherry now that you mention it. I prefer the taste of diet things to regular pop.

Yep. I had given it up months before I got pregnant. But since I was diagnosed with G.D., it's been one of my few cravings I can indulge in. Aspartame is OK during pregnancy; Truvia/Stevia is not. Drink up. Now I want another. Ha.

  • You could try Zevia. It's made w/ stevia extract. I was shopping at Whole Foods the other day and I was so thirsty and needed something a little sugary. I grabbed a can just to try it. It tastes pretty darn good! No funny aftertaste! A little more carbonated than regular soda but it was good! Also, no calories and since it's made with stevia, low in sugar. They have all different flavors too.

Weird... my doctor told me the opposite.

  • I just watch my calories - probably closer than most people. I gained 60 pounds last time and am trying to avoid it this time. If I don't watch my calories I over-eat.

So I'm probably thinking too much about it. I had a vanilla coke tonight and it was delish. :)

  • I drink diet pop too, about one a day. (It's been my biggest craving!) Have you tried Diet Rite? It's made with Splenda and tastes awesome!
