December 2013 Moms

What's your day job?

And do you plan to keep it after the baby comes?

I work in marketing for a specialty insurance company. Not a lot of overtime, pretty family-friendly. Even so, if I thought DH would be on board, I'd definitely become a SAHM. My mom was and it was just really nice having her there all the time, even as I went through school. His mom has always worked full-time so we have split backgrounds on that. He might change his mind once he sees what the cost of childcare is!

  • I'm a dentist with an unreasonable amount of student loans. I like my job and will be working, but I wish I could take longer than 6 weeks ML. My mom will be watching the LO a couple days a week, so that helps with the going back to work thing.
  • I run education programs at a science museum- my absolute dream job.  It's pretty flexible and around the corner from DH's job and I have THE most amazing boss ever, so I want to stay working here.  But I also know things will be quite different
  • District Attorney here and Marine Wife. I plan on coming back but will be a SAHM for a little while when we move in a few years. I love my job and have 12 weeks to take. I have a good daycare plan set up with family so it makes the transition easier. Howe

I'm an aerospace engineer currently working in software design, too! I think there are quite a few of us these days. My male coworker was also an aerospace engineer before coming to this job.

  • I'm an optometrist working for a couple of different offices. I plan to take 6 weeks Mat leave. In Canada, most of us get a year, but since I'm self-employed I don't get any. After 6 weeks I'll just go back PT and gradually work my way up to working ~

For my first baby, I took 8 weeks of maternity leave and went back to work (at that time in the marine renewable energy field).

My advice: Go look at the actual cost of day care / nanny / whatever you're comfortable with. Compare that cost to you

  • I'm a financial aid advocate for a mental health center.

Hopefully between PTO and sick pay, I'd like to take 12 weeks off, but more than likely it'll be 6-8. I'll be going back to work, we need both our salaries, plus I'd want to go back anywa
