August 2013 Moms

How many do you know...

Last week we finally found out that it's a girl - yay Team Pink! We're really excited but are having a little bit of trouble deciding on a name.

So far our frontrunner is Isabel, with Izzy as a nickname, BUT my hesitation is that Isabel/Isabelle is so popular. I also have a popular name, so I know how annoying it can be to be one of 5 kids with the same name in your class/group of friends/office.

I'm a FTM and most of my friends don't have kids yet, so I personally don't know any little Isabels. What about you all - are there tons of Isabels running around? I might post this on the Baby Name board as well, but thought I'd get the August mamas opinions first. Thanks!

Re: How many do you know...

  • I don't know any, actually. It's a pretty name, but I would worry about popularity as well.

  • Isabella is a popular name here, but Isabel I haven't heard in a while.  It's pretty.  It's one of the names we were thinking about with our dd.
  • Yes, there are lots of little Isabels around. I know two under age five, with three more who have Isabel as a middle name. And I don't know that many little kids personally.

Remember that Isabel's popularity is even higher than it looks on lists

  • I've been using my state top 100 to gauge popularity, a lot of the common popular names overall aren't common in my state.

  • It is a popular name I know quite a few of them.

  • I have an Isabella in my kinder class, but thats the only one I know. I agree with you though, that I don't want to give my child an overly popular name where I have to worry about 5 other (insert name) in the class.

  • I know a fair amount of kids/babies named Isabelle. I know at least one who is "Izzy" for short.

As a kid I grew up with at least one other Erin in every single class or group I was in, I also have always had at least one other Erin in each of my

  • It's a very popular name. I would call it this generation's "Jessica" or "Ashley". I don't know that many little kids, but I have a coworker with a 3 year old named Isabel, and my cousin's little daughter who just turned one is named Isabella Rose. I t

  • We actually just had some friends give birth to an Isabelle last week! But she is the only baby Isabelle I know. My great aunt's name is Isobel.
  • Have you thought of using a longer name that could be shortened to Izzy, but is not the popular Isabel? For example, my friend wanted to use the nickname Max but didn't like Maxim, Maximillan, etc., so she named him Malcolm.

  • I only know one, and she is in her 50s so it doesn't seem to be too popular here in Toronto! :) I think it's a beautiful name.

  • We decided on the name Isabella. I was in the opposite situation you were with a very unusual name growing up, then and now, people have always mispronounced or misspelled my name. It gave me a bit of a complex growing up, low self esteem as it was easy f

I can tell you I was one of 4 Sarah's in my class growing up. I hated being Sarah [LastInitial], but it wasn't *that* big of a deal. For reference, Sa

Also, I know an Isabella but not an Isabelle.  I don't think my son has any Isabelle's in his class either.
