Diapering

Question Ladies,
Have any of you ever used Diapers.com? Is it worth it and cost effective? I saw that pack of pampers newborn contained 32 diapers and went for $10.00 or less. But how long does that last? Like 2-4 days? I know each baby is different, but I am just trying to figure out how to do this in the most cost effective way. What did you ladies do for diapering when you had your LOs or what will you do?  Thanks in advance ladies

Re: Diapering

  • Unless they are running a special, I've found Diapers.com to be more expensive than buying at my grocery store or BRU.

I'm trying to remember, but DD went through average a dozen diapers a day and she wasn't a big pooper. She went every other day as a newborn. Poopers are gonna use even more diapers.

The hardest thing is getting the right size and trying to determine how long baby is going to be in that size. May stay in 1s for two weeks or two months.

Look at your local grocery store prices and Target, etc prices and see how they compare with Diapers.com.

I used this to research for a subscription based product. I've heard good things about diapers.com. Amazon also has a subscription. I think we'll be doing honest company since you can move around your dates (and the prints are cute)

Also, when I asked some friends they said they maybe used more early on, but to keep in mind you might get some diapers (diaper cake anyone?) from a shower to supplement

My mother has a BJs membership she is willing to share so that's most likely where we will buy them. Roughly $25 for newborn diapers in the popular brands, you get 88 for pampers swaddlers and $40 for the other sizes in all brands. Pampers swaddlers size 1 have 186 in a box. Increasing sizes seem to have less in them. I'm not exactly sure how much we'd be saving but I feel like once we figure out what works it'll be convenient to buy in bulk.

Larger sizes have less in the box as, generally, they need less diapers as they get older and aren't going as often. DD is almost two, wearing size 4, and uses about 5 diapers a day now.

@redfallon I thought so, thanks for clarification!
Do you think bulk buying a box or two at a time would make sense?

Absolutely! As long as baby is in the same size for a while, then that works out. It's when they are transitioning that it gets tricky.

  • Target often has good sales on diapers. If you buy two boxes you get a $15 gift card. We usually wait until a sale and then stock up.
  • I like this thread!! As a FTM I have NO idea how much I should be spending on diapers! I was thinking of buying some at Costco this weekend, to stock up!
  • This week we started buying diapers and will buy a pack or two on every grocery run. We just bought what we had a coupon for. That'll add up in the end. We got Pamper Swaddlers size 1 and Cruisers size 3... I'm getting a wide range of sizes. Most stores will let you exchange for a different size, and my friend recommended saving the receipt and taping it to the box because different stores will carry boxes with different amounts in them than other stores. This makes exchanging boxes easier.
  • Yes! Tape each receipt to the box. I felt like I was constantly exchanging sizes the first year.
  • DS used 10-12 diapers a day in the beginning. He wore the preemie swaddlers for almost a month. (He was not a preemie) Then he wore newborn for about a month. He wore size 1 for 3 weeks tops. The idea of taping receipts to boxes is excellent. I have used Amazon mom mostly but do buy some at target when they are on sale. Also at some point around 4 months old you may want to get a larger size for nighttime wear. It really helped us limit changing pjs and sheets in the middle of the night.
  • I looked online at prices and at different stores and just priced it out by how much it would cost per diaper. Usually we buy from BRU or Costco (occasionally Target) depending whether there are sales

A few times I've gotten various types/brands/sizes in the small packages. I know I've paid more for these but it felt like a good way to test fit.

Now that DS is staying in a size longer, and we know there's another baby on the way that can wear them if he outgrows them first, we've been bulk buying a little farther ahead.
  • Keep in mind that not all diapers work for all babies. With my oldest we used Huggies, they were great. We tried Huggies for the second, and no matter what he leaked. We switched to Pampers and they worked fine. I personally don't like Luvs because they have a smell I cannot get past. I didn't get too many newborns because both my boys grew out of them fast. They went through sizes quick until they got to size 4-5 then I used Amazon.
  • Is BJs similar to Sam's Club? I'm interested in buying diapers from Sam's. Any experience anyone?

I've also noticed Luvs makes a definite crinkle noise when baby moves. My son can't walk in them without me laughing the whole time. I was turned off by the smell at first but as my son has gotten bigger and gets some definite BO funk I can stand the diaper smell better. I figure at least it smells clean rather than like an old gym bag. He gets a bath everyday so he is clean, just smells funky.

@AudriannaMaria I don't have any experience with Sam's or BJ's but I've bought diapers at Costco. They're a bit more limited there but price isn't bad. They only carry Huggies and their store brand. Occasionally another store (BRU usually for us) will have a better price for a sale but for the regular price it's a good buy if you like that brand. I would just go in the store and price shop.
  • I buy my diapers on Amazon using the subscribe and save feature which gives me 15% off. So a big economy size box is $35 rather than $45. You can sign up for Amazon mom or Amazon prime for 3 months free. During those 3 months use the subscribe and save feature and get everything 15% off.

But I would wait until you have your baby to sign up so you know which diapers you like best.

  • Someone recently posted this and it was very helpful to me https://youtu.be/HQGvr8MEiyg
They mention the Amazon mom being one of the most cost effective methods or target. I also thought it was helpful To think about diapers in the .10-.12 cent range as being a great deal so stock up when they're that low
  • I've been told that Luvs are terrible. I don't know anyone who uses them or likes them. They are the ones people have complained about the most.

  • Luvs are terrible! Awful no good pieces of shit! Literally shit everywhere! My favorites are Pampers Swaddlers and Target's up and up brand diapers!

Yes in 2013 when I was pg with DS, Amazon mom had an amazing offer that if you join you get a free economy size box of diapers of your choice. So I signed even though I already had prime. I still got like 300 diapers for free! So be on the look out for an Amazon mom sign up offer.

Edited: oops, it was more like 300 diapers free.

  • Ftm here... so sorry this is a stupid question. What is meant by a diaper "subscription service"? As in, a certain number of diapers mailed each week? How would the sizes change?

Yes they are similar, but may have different brands and prices. Try their website maybe? I was able to check BJ's website to see they carry most brands and the price.

Hey @alanna3622 - I only have experience with Amazon subscribe and save, but with that you can determine the frequency and quantity of an item you subscribe for, and have the option of managing this if needs change. I just signed up for Amazon mom thanks to the rec here, and imagine it would work similarly.

Yep, that's it. You select what you want and how often you want it sent to you automatically.
