My stepfather was a cop for near 30 years. As a teen there were always multiple guns in our house, and I never even blinked at it. Living in the city, the only time I ever got to shoot guns was during summer camp, and those were .22 single shot rifles....not much of a weapon, although still deadly.
Now there is all the push to get stricter gun control passed, and it is being pushed based on a need to save our children and families from the type of mass shootings that happened in CO and CT. My heart cried for all those children that were murdered by that monster while in school. The innocence that was lost by that event will never be able to return to that community as a result of this senseless act of violence.
As father's, we take our duty to protect our families seriously. I know that I do. Again, being a city boy, I am always on tilt when we are out and about, ready to react, if needed, to any conflict that we may become involved in, or any crime that is committed against us. I have been like that since high school, when gangs really started to become part of our community thumbprint in the late 80's and early 90's.
Right now we have a dog that protects the house while we are not home. I do not own a handgun yet (I hunt and have my rifles locked down in the basement), but everyday I start to think more and more about purchasing one. The world is wild right now, and in today's age of crime and people responding to one another in a violent way, it seems like families really need to do more to protect thmeselves. C&C laws are not in place here in Wisconsin, and I am considering applying for the permit and taking the courses needed to get my C&C permit before I really start to consider buying a handgun for the house.
How do the rest of you dad's feel about guns, and having a gun as a way to protect your family at home? Violence and acts of aggressions do not seem to be ending anytime soon, and I do feel that I am not protecting my family as best I can from time to time, without a gun in the house.
Re: Guns in the Home.....Do You, Or Would You?
I grew up on a farm and learned to shoot a gun when a rifle was longer than I was tall. I was also warned if I ever touched one without my parents or grandparents around I wouldn't walk right for a week.
I live in Miami now so my feelings are mix
My stepfather had his handguns in their bedroom right next to his side of the bed. Loaded with the safety on. We knew, growing up, that even thinking about touching his guns would lead to severe, life-threatening consequences.

Did you run it down?
Would not could not, in my house.
I fish all summer long. There are a dozen lakes within 30 minutes of my house.
I used to bow hunt. That was very challenging. Gear costs too much now. My name here is the name of my black lab, and she is the best bird do
My Grandparents and relatives had guns in their homes and with my dad's folks the rifles were kept unloaded in the corners of the house. We were taught at a very early age not to touch without permission and how to check that the gun is unloaded
Personally, I'm not huge on the idea of having a gun in my house, thought about it a few times, but don't see it happening. The only reason it even comes to mind is if society were to break down, those with the guns are going to be the ones with
