What are the chances your OB delivers your baby?

For mobile: What are the chances your OB delivers your baby?

I know there have been a couple of post where people mention meeting the other OBs in their practice because they might be the one delivering the baby. At my last appointment I got a list of all the OBs that share on-call with mine, and it got me wondering what everyone else's set up is.

For me there are *drum roll* 12 other doctors who all rotate at the hospital, only one of them is on call at a time. So chances of my OB deliver my baby are basically zero. I am not very surprised by this, I feel like for where I live (Toronto, Canada) this is completely normal.

How about everyone else? Those of you who have midwives, does that mean you are 100% guaranteed that your midwife will be there, or do they also share their practice?

  • I'm also interested in how this works if you have a midwife or a doctor with a solo practice.

My practice is a lot like what you described, OP....four doctors that I know, sharing hospital rotation with another entire practice for backups.

With DS, I had 3 Drs in my practice and when I went past due and they started talking induction, I chose to be induced on the day that the Dr I had the best rapport with and trusted the most was on call. Which happened to be the n

  • I think there are 6 docs in my practice. I have seen one of the others, and will see doc #3 next week during my checkup. From what I've heard, they are there for such a short time that it doesn't matter much. As long as I have good nurses, I'll be fine. <

  • I live in Alberta and I really think it depends on the practice. My OB works with 4 other OB's but she is pretty young and has a relatively small patient base where as the other 4 are 4 of the most popular OB's in the city plus I have my OB's cell number

  • My OB tries to deliver her own patients. That being said her husband is having surgery so she is taking a few days off 2 weeks before my due date. I'll probably have my baby girl when shes off lol.

Edit: I live about an hour away from you OP.
  • Well, I'll be delivering my baby.  But one of the two doctors at my practice will likely be attending the delivery, unless they both can't make it but I think that's rare.
  • I'm in Northern Ontario, so I'm in a similar situation. I don't know how many different OBs there are, but I'll get whoever is on call. I hadn't met the doctor who delivered DS, but he was fantastic! I'm fine going with the flow.

  • I've heard you can usually talk to the dr you want and they sometimes work with you. Where I go now, it's the midwives who will most likely deliver you. Even if you are seeing one of the Docs. The Dr's only come when it is an emergency or high risk.
