Why would anybody attempt "natural" childbirth?

Not trying to be snotty, I just really don't understand. From what I understand the risks to mother and baby for using an epidural are so small. We have modern medicine, why not use it and avoid the pain?

Those wanting to go natural (without pain drugs) is there something I should know?

  • Why avoid the pain? To me, it's part of life, I'll deal. Also, there are women, like my SIL, who two pushes and they're done. She was barely there long enough to get into her gown.

For me it's just a matter of personal preference.  DH and I had to go through some fairly invasive fertility treatments in order to get pregnant.  It meant doctors, drugs, and ultrasounds were a part of our daily life.  I would just like

  • Yep, I agree with the previous posters completely. I actually enjoyed the labor process with DS. It's part of the experience. I did end up getting an epidural with him after 12 hours of pitocin labor, and it was a total waste. It didn't work at all. Plus

I chose to get the epidural, it quit working after a couple of hours. I ended up having a c/s after 21 hours of labor because the cord was around her neck twice and she could not move down. So then with the c/s the epidural was removed since it was not

  • It is definitely each individuals choice and what they want their labor experience to be like.  Medical interventions have a cascading effect for many people.  Induction leads to Pitocin which leads to epidural which may cause the labor to slow
  • At this is early point in my pregnancy, I'm hoping to go without an epidural, but I think I will ask for some kind of pain killer. If you asked me this question a few months ago I would have no question said I want an epidural. I'm finding that I want to

  • I had a natural childbirth with my daughter for many reasons.  I went in with the mentality that if it became too much, I'd consider other options.  It was painful, but not to sound weird, but it was the most beautiful thing I ever experience

  • I'm considering it this time. I had a rough labor the first time (4-day induction--I had pre-E). If I can avoid being induced this time, then I'd like to try to go as long as possible without the epidural.

I feel very strongly that women should have the option of an epidural/ other medical pain-managment options, should they need them, but to write off everyone interested in natural birth *

  • I've done it both ways.

With my first I had the epidural and it was a fabulous birth experience.  I felt very mentally present since I wasn't focused on the pain. I pushed for about 25 minutes but couldn't feel what I was doing.&n

  • Because epidurals that are turned up too high are contributing to a massive rise in women with pelvic floor problems later in live (urinary incontinence, uterine prolapse, etc) and there are LOTS of risks to both epidural anesthesia as well as IV anest

Well maybe I'm the minority but there is no way I would be having a second child if I couldn't get another epidural. I was 5 cm when I finally asked for it and honestly I wouldn't have cared if Jack the Ripper came in and put it in with a knife at that
