Cross Post April 2012 - Help

Need some advice on a current family situation...any advice would be great...thanks :)

What would you do....

I just found out that the daycare/inhome babysitter who has kept Robbie since he was 8 weeks old is closing it's doors.  Amy just isnt able to afford it since she has had a couple of kids leave and hasn't been able to fill their spots.  She has a 13 year old son that she has to take care of and says that by keeping the daycare open this long, she has pretty much depleted all of her savings, checking, etc.  She told us today that her last day is next friday (4/26).  Robbie LOVES her.  She was sobbing when she told me because she is so upset.  She loves Robbie and doesn't want this to happen, but has to take care of her own family.  Robbie is in the age of "stranger danger" where he will not go to anyone.  He wants mommy, his Oma (my mom), or Amy.  He is comfortable with us and if anyone else comes near or tries to take him, he goes hysterical from being so nervous/scared.  I know that it is healthy to expose LO to other people so that he isn't so attached to only a few people -- but it's hard for me to just leave him knowing that he will be scared.  I am also extremely picky about who watches him due to my brother being sexually abused as a child in a caretaking sutaiton.....That always is in the back of my mind.  DH and I make decent money together.  His salary pays all of our monthly bills and mine goes straight to savings.  Currently we owe $59,000 on our house (valued at $165,000) and $19,000 in a home equity loan.  We have no vehicle debt, no student loans, or anything like that.  DH brings home approximately $2200/month and right now I bring home between 1800/month (I carry all healthcare insurance, etc on myself and Robbie).  We also have nearly $18,000 in savings.  Our monthly bills total approx $1000 (that includes daycare of $360.month that will no longer be coming out).  If you were in my situation - would you suck it up and find another babysitter/daycare and keep working --- or would you quit your job and stay home with your kiddo?

  • Would it be feasible to hire Amy as a nanny?

  • As a 3rd option, what if you work part time? Would you have someone to watch him 2 days a week? I would probably quit my job in your financial situation but it sounds like then you might start dipping into savings.
  • Do you have the option of taking a leave of absence from work to give you time to decide?
  • How much would insurance be if y'all had to switch to your DH's?

That would be a concern for me because I know my DH's for a family is like $800/month.
