if i DO have a girl, i am banning

all things princess. nothing makes me feel more barftastic than when little girls are treated like princesses, from being called a princess to wearing clothes that say this.  gross, no thanks.

i am equal opportunity with my son (notice he has a my little pony lol).  He plays with all kinds of toys, and i don't buy overtly 'boy' clothing (e.g. shirts that say things like  "tough guy"  ewwww   i don't think things have to be shoved down a certain sex's throat just because of a penis or vag.

  • LOL did this stem from my barbie in pink shoes comment?

I totally agree with you on not forcing anything on them, but I remember when I was little I totally wanted all that frilly crap.

  • I actually completely agree with you. I think that many times kids get forced into one gender role or the other.  Took a whole class on college on gender rolls. For example, watch TV commercials today  and pay attention...IN the kitchen : ALW

  • Do we agree on something?

Okay, so I won't ban all princess play but I'm certainly not going to be the one to introduce the heavily merchandised world of princess commercialization to my daughter.

And I'm just against most all clothes

  • This probably could have just been put in the other thread....but I'll bite anyway.

    I am soooo anti-gender stereotypes.

  • I agree although I think it may be easier said than done.  My brother and SIL were 100% against the whole princess thing but once she got into daycare and around other kids, she was exposed to it and that is all she wants now.  They try so hard

  • DD#1 loves monster trucks and dinosaurs as much as she loves princesses. And my DS plays with the girls' princesses right along with them.

  • Love it! Totally agree with the princess thing bI don't want my kid growing up with that sense of entitlement.
  • I think that intensely anti-princess mentality is just as bad.  I will give my kid the options without any persuasion.  I liked and played with both boy's and girl's toys.  In fact, the ninja turtles usually got paired up with the strawberr

  • you say this now...but when the first words out of your DD's mouth every morning are "I want to put on a princess dress" you will be singing a different tune ;-)

I did not force princesses on my kid, but she is certainly forcing them on  me

  • My DD loves all things princessy, but girl can hold her own with the boys too.  I think everything in moderation :).

  • I sincerely hope we are leaving Shera princess of power out of the "princess" category. ;D

  • On a serious note...when I was a kid I loved princesses, Barbies, and all things pink. But I also wanted SO bad to be a power ranger, or one of the chick Xmen. We just do what we can! They will become who they will become...and we can do our best to educ

  • I think the main thing we are talking about here is the difference between liking the princess stories and dressing up, and straight up acting like a princess. That was NEVER acceptable in my home growing up, any hint of a sense of entitlement was met wit
  • ugh. My family family this princess crap at my daughter like It's the best thing ever. I'm glad she likes other things like bmx bikes and books.

  • I used to think this way, but now that I have a daughter that has completely changed. I still don't like the clothing that has sassy writing all over it, but I won't stop my daughter from watching Disney movies or anything like that. I grew up on those an

  • We don't do princess at our house too much. We play dress up and she has the Melissa and Doug castle which came with a princess and prince.

I also try to avoid non toy character crap in general. I don't buy angry bird crackers or tinker bell

  • I agree that the intense anti-princess thing is just as bad. We go around telling our boys it's ok to play with anything (dolls, trucks, kitchen toys, whatever), but then there is this movement against letting our girls pick anything. Introduce a variety

  • I totally agree. And like you, I'm totally cool with my son playing with traditionally "girl" toys. He has a doll, he's getting a play kitchen for his birthday (not that I really think this is girly, but some people do). He loves to wear my heels and p
