To crib or not to crib?

Hey ladies! I'm debating right now whether or not to get a crib... Any thoughts? We plan to use this cosleeper for nighttime for the first five months or so:

And my cousin is giving us their Bright Starts play yard:

(sorry, Firefox doesn't let me make them clicky)

Do you think a crib is necessary? Will we regret not having one once the baby outgrows the cosleeper? Is a convertible crib/toddler bed worth it? Just debating whether or not to put one on my baby registry...

 Thanks! :)

Re: To crib or not to crib?

  • I really can't imagine not having a crib. IMO yes, a convertible crib is worth it. I don't know the limits on a co-sleeper, but what are you planning on doing with kid once he/she outgrows it?  A pack n play isn't a long term solution, at least to me

  • A crib is a necessity. A convertible crib is definitely worth it.
  • We didn't use a crib until Lucas was a year. We did the RnP then PnP. I can't imagine not having a crib the past year.

  • I'm using the ARC for the first 6-8 months, and you COULD just choose to get a mattress that fits the bottom of the play yard rather than a crib. You will want a contained area for a mobile infant or toddler to nap, even if you choose to continue cosle

  • We have a crib, but we never used it. DD was in her co-sleeper until 8 months, then we tried her in the crib and she hated it. I have no idea why. She was fine in the PNP in her own room, so the issue was the bed, not the transition to a new room. She sle
  • Since our plan right now is to use the RNP and then PNP we are holding off on getting a crib until we need it. We will get one at probably the year mark but it's a big purchase and it's not something we need right away. We have a friend who has offered to

  • We have a crib but dd1 never used it. She went from the cosleeper to a pnp and now she is in a double bed. Dd2 went from the cradle in our room to a pnp in sisters room. We plan on putting her in a double as soon as she is walking. We have a crib for this

  • I've never used a crib. Kiddos go straight from cosleeping to a twin mattress on the floor.

Eta, I'd wait until after the babe is here to see if you find the need for one, its not like they are in short supply and having a bulky crib sittin

  • I can't imagine not having a crib. My kids slept in a PnP for around 3 months in our room. Then they went to their own room, in the crib.

We are very firm about our children sleeping in their own room and beds. My kids have actually never once

  • We def got a convertible crib. I bought each new bed with the last 2 and it is just financially better to get the convertible.

  • I say yes to a crib.  We got a pretty basic, convertible crib from Target for $100 on sale.  It got great reviews and is exactly what we wanted without breaking the bank.

  • I'd definitely get a crib.

We have convertible cribs for both kids. Yes, they both started out sleeping in something else (bassinet, RnP, etc) but eventually (and quickly!) they outgrew these. I don't remember exactly WHEN we moved both of them t

  • I just want to point out that not everyone has room for a full sized crib no matter how cheap they may be let alone an entire room just for a child. Mini cribs and portable wooden cribs can be a solution but they often have mixed reviews. We will buy the

  • agree with the crib is worth it.   i wouldn't know what to do without it. We never used a convertible crib.  When both kids were old enough, we got a big child bed and they transitioned from crib to big "child" bed.
  • I have a number of friends who skipped the crib. Co slept and then babe went to a mattress on the floor.

I say skip it for now. If you decide you want it go out and buy it then. You can order the DaVinici Kalani off Amazon for $250 and free

  • We are not getting a crib. 2 reason we don't have room for one and we didn't use it with my DD. We did co sleeping until she was about 4yrs old. We plan on doing it with this one as well.

  • One more opinion here, a crib is worth the money but I'm not a fan of the convertible crib.  I think those are a waste especially since you have to pay for the conversion kits and those aren't cheap.  Toddler beds are fairly inexpensive or you c

  • If you have the room in your bedroom, the crib can actually serve the purpose of all those things... we took the front off of the crib, attached it to our bed very tightly so the mattresses were level with each other, and ta-da, we had a co-sleeper unt

  • Personally, I can't imagine not having a crib.  While my DS didn't sleep in it at night at first, we always used it for naps.  As he got older, he used it all of the time and continues to at 2.5 years with the crib converted to a toddler bed.
