Makeup for kids??

Ok so this has been bugging me for awhile, so I figured I would bring this to the board and see what ya'll say...

So, my girlfriend invited me over for "girls night" to hang out with her 4 & 6 year old girls. But when I showed up at her house and the girls were all dressed up and wearing makeup I was a bit taken aback. I do not mind dress up - in fact I was expecting it - but these kids were covered in makeup, and kept looking at themselves in the mirror saying how much prettier they were with it on, and how they wish the could wear it all the time. I guess I was upset because these little girls thought that makeup would make them prettier...and they are 4 & 6!! They should be rubbing their faces with dirt - not thinking about makeup- or even thinking about being prettier! I know they want to be like their "mom" (who wears a ton of makeup) but I think the conversation should be "this is for adults, maybe when you get older.." Am I the only one who thinks that makeup for kids at this age is not appropriate??

Re: Makeup for kids??

  • My ds1 loved putting in make up and putting it on me. I think make up at that age for fun and dress up is fine. Their reaction seems a little off putting though.

I played dress up with makeup at that age. I would spin and twirl and say how pretty i was. Once i took it off, i was back to mudpies and gi joes without a second thought. It is concerning though that they seemed to think they were only pretty with it o

  • Why is mom in quotations? Is she not their actual mom?
  • I think looking in the mirror and saying how pretty they are is a little over the top, but my DD#1 watches me put makeup on everyday and she copies everything I do. For her bday my SIL gave her a little box that had some eyeshadow lipstick blush makeup br

  • I think it was just innocent fun. My daughter will probably play with makeup because I wear it. I played with it when I was little and I'm not super vain. If the mom wears a bunch of make up then it's kind of expected the girls are into make up.

  • I played dress up as a kid, but never wore/tried makeup until high school.
