Toddlers: 24 Months+

2 y o is afraid of the dark

Our 2 y o recently started saying her room is too dark, even with a really bright night light on. She was turning on her light after we put her to bed and falling asleep with it on. I recently bought the Cloud B Twilight Turtle hoping that would help her ease into more darkness and she FREAKED out with it in her room and insisted on putting it my room.

We've been playing with the turtle the past few nights to try to get her to warm up to it since it does give off more light than her night light, but waaaaaaaay less than her room light. She doesn't even want to close her eyes because it's "too dark."

Any one else have experience with a toddler who's all of a sudden afraid of the dark?

Re: 2 y o is afraid of the dark

  • My 4yo sleeps with a small desk lamp on in her room and has for awhile (at least a year or longer). Is there any reason you can't put a light on in her room?

  • If she is falling asleep with the light on (instead of playing) then I don't see the problem. I agree with a small lamp.

I slept with my door half open so the light from the hallway would come in until I was in college.

  • We had a night light, and the turtle (that my son LOVED) with him in his crib. Around 2.5 years he started to be afraid of the dark even with those things.

He now (still) sleeps with his bedside lamp on. He STTN no problem & it has no

  • Thanks, all! I guess I'll just keep a small lamp on in her room. I would crack her door, but she would come out and play if I did that.

  • I just wanted to add that my little guy decided out of nowhere last week that he was afraid of the dark- one night he went to bed fine, and the next he was crying hysterically because he didn't want to turn the light off.

I was all ready to sugge

  • DD is 3, and has been sleeping with her closet light on for about 4 months.  It started because she started saying she was scared, it was too dark, etc.  We will turn it on when she goes to bed, and after she falls asleep, we'll turn it off. &nb
  • Mine have both gone through this on & off... at one point they both insisted on lamps on in the room. I ended up trading DS's out for a smaller more dim one. His issue is that he reads in his room before falling asleep so pitch black was not working.
