Baby oatmeal vs. rice cereal?

We aren't quite ready for either one yet, but I know my pedi will recommend starting one of these at our 4 month appt in a few weeks.  Anyone know he pros and cons of rice vs. oatmeal?  From what I understand, rice has basically zero nutritional value.  I am inclined to skip it, but I am wondering if oatmeal might be better.  Experiences anyone?

Re: Baby oatmeal vs. rice cereal?

  • We didn't start solids until six months and started with sweet potatoes. I think I gave them some rice cereal, but switched to oatmeal pretty quickly.

I thought I read that the AAP recommends starting solids at six months now, but I could be

  • Never gave my 1st baby she didnt like either so I just gave her veggie and fruits puree that I would make her....I started at 6months.... I know a lot of moms skip those :)
  • Never did cereal or oatmeal with DD1. We also waited till almost 6 months and just did BLW. It was so easy! I plan to do the same with DD2.

  • We waited till 6 months.  With DD we did rice then switched to oatmeal once the box ran out.  We are not going to do rice this time though because I have been reading about how there is arsenic in rice.

  • I curious why your pedi would start recommending this soon. Most every thing says wait till 6 months. And rice cereal has zero nutritional value.

  • I'm skipping both and just going into pureed foods (avocado, applesauce, banana, sweet potato) when she's 6 months.

  • The AAP, WHO, and CAP (Canada) all recommend breastmilk or formula only for 6 months. Healthy full term babies have enough iron stores to last for 6 months. My pedi said the Health Canada recommendation is to wait til 6 months then start with any iron ric

  •  We're going to try avocado first around six months. Perhaps later on we will try oatmeal. If you are set on doing one or the other, I would have to say go with oatmeal, as rice cereal has absolutely no nutritional value.

  • With DS I tried both.  We did a few trials around 4 months but he really didn't like it, would barely take any.  What I did find useful was when I was trying to make baby food thicker.  Add the oatmeal to it and it gives it more texture.
