Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Soft spot slightly sunken

My DD is 3 months today. In the past few weeks I notice that her soft spot is sometimes ever so slightly sunken. I can only tell when I gently run my fingertip across the too if her head you can't tell just by looking. She had plenty of wet and dirty diapers so I don't think she's dehydrated. She's growing on track too. Should I be concerned about the soft spot? Or is this normal? Our next appt is in 1 month, so I will ask then, but I want to know if its serious enough to make an appt sooner...

Re: Soft spot slightly sunken

  • I just heard about this! It can mean dehydration. Not saying that's what's going on for sure, but just a thought!

  • You can call and ask if you are concerned, but check if it goes away next time after you feed DD. I sometimes notice it on DS when he wakes up after not eating for a long time. As soon as he eats and rehydrates, it's back to normal.

  • I read somewhere that this is normal, especially if it's been awhile since they've eaten, or while they are sitting upright.  If it stays sunken in when they are laying down, that can be a sign of dehydration, because then it isn't just gravity makin
  • Unless it is severely sunken I wouldn't worry. Many babies have noticeable soft spots. My son's can still be felt, but not seen. (he has very fine blonde hair). He is quite happy and eats every 2-3 hours.  Maybe it's more noticeable in light-weigh

  • Thanks everyone!!

  • I noticed that just before LOs one month appointment ... would pulse up and down when she'd cry. Dr said it's normal. There is also similar spot on the sternum. It's where bones have not yet fused. Never saw it on a baby before my LO and only notice

  • My LO's soft spot is sunken in and I can also see the pulse sometimes.  I've asked the pediatrician about it several times, and he keeps assuring me that I don't have to worry about it as long as DS is eating well and has plenty of wet diapers.
