March 2013 Moms

"if you don't know...now you know..."

I don't know about anyone else, but I've found myself really surprised by the amount of things I've learned so far since getting pregnant and having my daughter that were never mentioned in any baby book (what to expect, girlfriends guide, etc.).  This board has been a tremendouse source for the 'is this normal.' sort of things.  I'd love to see what other ladies were surprised to learn as well!

I for one, was not prepared for Blebs!  As a BF-ing Mama, I was pretty shocked to pull a long stringy thing from my nipple the other day.  Certain I was ripping out some sensitive duct-work I to to Dr.Google and discovered that they're normal and they're the result of a clogged duct.  When I met with my lactation consultant today, she suggested a warm compress and a massage to break them up and after I did just that, my right side rewarded me with bleb-city.  Nothing like straining your breastmilk through a tea ball. Ewwwwwuh.

Also, I won't ready for the way my modesty changed.  I have always been a somewhat private, self conscious person when it comes to my body and it's functions, and the three days post-section in the hospital changed ALL that.  Between my nurses checking my lochia flow or helping me to the bathroom, I just transitioned to the laid back-over sharer that I think has been hiding inside all along.  The day of my first bowel movement I think every one (including the room cleaner and the lady that delivered the meal trays) knew because I proudly announced it as soon as they cleared our threshold.

As for baby, I was a little shocked to see a small amount of mucousy blood coming from DD's lady-bits.  Turns out...also normal and a result of MY hormones running through her body.  Unprepared for that, but just another thing I learned.

Anyone else?

  • With my first, DD would not lay flat.  And because that is how they're supposed to sleep, I remember feeling clueless as to what to do about it.  No one told me that some babies are just like that and how to accommodate it.

  • I honestly just learned what  blebs was... slightly amazed and grossed out all at the same time. At least I will not be completely freaked out should this happen to me.

  • I will say that DD was never a great sleeper, but we did do a few think to make her less worse, if that makes sense.  The biggest was to elevate one end of her crib mattress so that she was not laying completely horizontal.  And for a while I

  • I have learned that some babies will only sleep on you. Some will simply not sleep elsewhere. And that's life.

  • Ah, blebs. I didn't know, but I had developed one 4 weeks prior to birth, and since it didn't hurt, I didn't mention it to my OB. I figured if it was possible to get more pigment on some parts of my body, then it was possible to lose pigment on part of
