Unusual names for grandparents

Have any of you ladies gotten requests from your parents/ILs to be called something other than your standard grandparent names like Grandma, Nana, etc? Anything off the wall, and if so how do you feel about it?

My mom has always said she didn't want to be called Grandma. Fine with me. She brought it up again the other day so I asked her what she wanted to be called. She said she would really like for LO to call her Sunny. I laughed when she told me & asked why that name. Her response was that she thinks it sounds fun. I didn't say yes or no but I could tell she was a little sad at my reaction. I think that's a strange name for a kid to call their grandmother, but was just wondering what your opinions are and if you are fielding any requests for weird grandparent names. Thanks!

Re: Unusual names for grandparents

  • I love that!! My mom will be called Honey. I would much rather the ones you don't hear all the time then grandma, nanna, etc.

  • My nieces and nephew call my MIL Kiki.  Sometimes Grandma Kiki, but mostly just Kiki.  I guess it goes far back in the family.

My mom said she'll be happy with whatever the kid wants to call her!

  • I'm not around much, but was reading and had to contribute!  My dad has named himself Coach, becuase he "always wanted to be a Coach."  My sister and I are going with it...it's sort of cute.

  • Growing up, my mom's parents were called Nana and Bumpa.  My sister couldn't say grandpa, and it came out Bumpa.  It stuck, and I love it.  But I wouldn't transfer it onto my dad - there is only one Bumpa!  :)  On my dad's side

  • My mom and dad felt they were too young to be "grandma and grandpa" so my son calls my mom Me-Me and my dad Pop Pop and his gf Ma-Ma (mah-mah). My grandmother is Nina (Nee-nah)

  • I guess I'm just boring and traditional. My mom wanted to be "Gamma" when my niece and nephew were born and I still hate it. Ugh. My dad is pawpaw.

When i was little, everyone was grandma and grandpa for the most part. What happened?

  • We have a Nana, two grandmas, meemaw, grandpa, pa, papa, and gig for great grandma. I also love yaya. It gets confusing having so many, we needed lots of separate names

  • No, I refuse to buy into this narcissistic BS from Boomers who feel they need a cute name because they are 'too young' to be called 'grandma' or 'grandpa'. I have always thought it was dumb; my cousins' other grandparents insisted on being called Mimi

  • That's funny...I admit, I'd laugh too. She wants to be the "fun" grandma huh? I didn't get requests per say. I always thought that my dad should be called Papa because we called his dad Papa. However my inlaws have adopted Papa for my husband's dad's name

  • To me, the grandparents should be grandma and grandpa - and nothing other than that.  Just like as a mom, I don't want my kids calling me and DH anything other than Mom and Dad.

That being said, DH's mom and stepdad go by nana and papa, I

  • Wow, thanks for all the input! I really like a lot of your suggestions. I called my Dad's parents Grandma and Grandma and my Mom's Nannie & Paw-Paw so maybe that's why Sunny seems so out there to me. Plus my mom is such a straight arrow kind of person

I call my grandparents Grandma & Grandpa - on both sides. I don't know if I'm just used to it, but I really don't want any cutesy names for our parents. DH's parents are Italian, and he called his grandparents Nonni and Papa. I guess I'd be okay wi

  • My inlaws already have grand kids and they are grandma and papaw. My dad is proud to be grandpa and my mom wants to be GG seeing there already is a grandma. I like them all!!! It's fun and easier to have different names for the sets of grandparents! =]
  • On my dad's side my grandparents were Memaw and Jack Daddy.  I lived diagonal from them, my great grandparents--Nannie and Dadda--lived across from us and next door to them.  Seems I was always hearing my aunt (only 10 years older than me) ca
