Parenting after a Loss

What did you do when you stopped bottles?

So DS is almost 1 (HOLY CRAP!!) and I'm thinking about how soon I'd like to get him off of bottles, and it occurred to me, what the heck do I do when he's not on bottles?  For example, every morning he wakes up and we change him and by the time he's done being changed he's clamoring for his bottle and then he sucks down six ounces and is completely happy afterward.  Same thing at bedtime.  He gets a bath, then PJ's and then we turn out the lights in his room and turn on his rain sounds and then he starts fussing for his bottle, then he melts into my arms when I give it to him and is ready for bed.

So when he's not on a bottle, when he wakes up do I just give him a cup of milk instead?  Or take him straight down to breakfast to eat (at 6:00 am) since he's obviously hungry?  What about at bedtime?  I know you're not supposed to give milk right before bed because it rots the teeth, so what do I do when he gets in his "time for bottle" mode right before bed?

TIA ladies :)

  • DS still gets a pre-bed bottle (yes, at 18 months - I know - I'm going to Mommy hell) but we brush his teeth afterwards before he gets into bed.  Adding that step was a big pain in the arse once he got teeth, but oh so necessary.

    As for the

  • We would just give DD a cup of milk. I think we completely got rid of the bottle just shy of 15 months. I weaned her at almost 14 months. However, she wasn't super attached to either, so perhaps if he's a bit attached, consider reducing one first and then

  • No advice, just wanted to echo that I am super nervous for it too.  DD is very attached to her bottle and her paci.  It is going to be a rough few months for us, I think :)

  • Around 11 months is when I started phasing out bottles. By the time her 1st b-day rolled around we were down to the early morning one and the right before bed one.

I replaced the day ones with milk sippies, but with way less milk.  About&n

  • Thanks ladies.  It seems like maybe I don't have to be completely done with bottles at exactly 12 months.  I am just nervous because he's so attached to them, but I guess we really lucked out since he self weaned from a paci at like 4 months.&nb

  • We gradually weaned down over a couple of months.  During the day, I just offered him a sippy of water.  At mealtimes, I offered him a sippy of milk.  Initially, I'd just offer him milk with breakfast.  We eat breakfast immediately aft
