Traditional Crib Bumpers

Is there an age where the traditional crib bumper is safe or should it be avoided permanently? We have a breathable bumper in DS's crib right now. The problem I'm having recently is him rolling around and constantly bumping his head of the crib rails. He is so tall already that he is as long as the crib is wide and he is constantly rolling fast and banging his head on the sides. The traditional bumper that came with this bedding set would help with this obviously but I'm afraid of it not being safe. Sorry if this is a dumb question!

I am sure many families make the choice to use them. My rampaging paranoia has me feeling more comfortable with a small bruise (and he has not gotten one yet) than all that cushioning in the bed.

I use a traditional one and have since the beginning. He always sleeps vertical and is also tall enough to stretch the width of the crib.. he bounces his feet off the side which then means he's smacking his head into the crib rails, so with the bump
