Thank you card etiquette

This is a question I had with my last baby and I'm curious what the general consensus is.  If someone gives you a gift in person (not for a shower, holiday, or birthday) and you are able to thank them in person, do you still do a thank you card?  I always do if a gift is sent to me and I don't see the giver face to face, but what about in this case?  Is sending a card after thanking them in person redundant or thoughtful?

Re: Thank you card etiquette

  • I think you should still send a thank you card.

  • I think it depends on the person. i.e. if my BFF gave me a cute outfit for the baby while we were out to lunch and I could ooo and ahh over it and thank her in person I prob wouldnt send a card but a coworker/IL/ someone else I would probably send the car

  • I think for a major event, like a shower, the answer is yes.  A thank you card is still in order.  But if someone hands you a gift in a one-on-one situation, I don't think you're obligated.  I never had, until my husband encouraged me to

  • You should always send thank you cards for gifts you receive. They should also always have a handwritten note that is personalized. I find "generic" thank yous to be tacky and lazy.

  • I agree that it's the polite thing to do, and that yes, in general, you should still send a thank you.

That being said, I also agree w the PP who said it depends on the person.

I know this is an UO, but I really don't like rece

  • I look at it this way:

when I was growing up, I had birthday parties. I would be told to thank everyone in person after I finished opening gifts. then, my Mom still had me write cards. :)

So I think yes, it would be a good idea
