Umbilical Hernia

Our LO has a very prominent umbilical hernia (bigger than the bottom of a fingernail polish bottle). The pediatrician is not at all concerned, but states if it has not corrected itself by age four or five then surgery would be needed.

Curious as to others experiences with umbilical hernias. Did they correct themselves? If so, at what age? If not, when was/is surgery performed?

Re: Umbilical Hernia

  • My daughter has one and her doctor said the same thing.

Hers has been steadily getting smaller and smaller but at first was quite large so much so that it would stick out of her clothes! Our doctor's daughter had one and she said had an innie by

  • My 4 month old has an umbicial hernia.  My pedi seemed to think it would fix itself and said even if it didn't completely fix itself that chances are she would never need surgery.

We just found out that my 20 month old has two ep

  • Thanks ladies! The hernia definitely bothers me more than him :)
  • My dd had a pretty good sized one, it did however get a lot smaller. It's so small now you can't even tell, but the dr did say by 3 or 4 if it didnt correct itself she woul need surgery. I'm glad it corrected itself!

  • Ds had a very prominent one for quite a while. It eventually resolved on its own around 8 months or so. Dd had a little one at birth, but it went away by 1 month.

  • My DD had one, it only lasted a few months.

I have one that developed after surgery several years ago. It shrunk a bit, then blew up again during pregnancy. Doctors aren't concerned.

  • My oldest had one, and it healed around 12 or 14 months.
