Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Who puts their baby down drowsy not asleep?

My DD is 16 weeks tomorrow. We have not done any sort of sleep training with her yet. My SIL was over today and can't believe that we get the baby asleep first before putting her down. She told me she put the mobile on and her kids would fall asleep on their own. Maybe that worked for them but no way would my DD go for that!

Am I the only one that spends time getting my LO to sleep before putting down at night and naps? Sometimes it takes multiple attempts too.

Re: Who puts their baby down drowsy not asleep?

  • My LO usually nurses to sleep so she is already passed out by the time I put her down for both naps and bedtime.

  • I should have mentioned..I FF and LO has reflux so she has to remain upright for 30 mins after a feed. So I can't just plop her in the crib after eating like my SIL suggested.
  • I put H down drowsy. I have not done any sleep training. He just doesn't stay asleep after I get up. He usually falls asleep during his bottle, wakes up when I burp him, and gets pretty drowsy if not completely asleep while we rock for a few moments (j

  • I was putting DS down drowsy but awake between 9w-14w. I'd bounce him 5-10 mins until he eyelids got droopy, then put him down. He'd stir a little and then fall asleep.

However, when 15w came along, he started fighting naps big time.  It cou

  • Yes, putting them drowsy does help with their sleep because they learn to fall asleep on their own. It wouldn't hurt to try it a few times with your DD and see if it works. She may surprise you. But....

She is only 4 months and you don't need to

  • At this age it's not so uncommon to have to soothe them to sleep. DS would let us lay him down drowsy. DD won't play that. Hopefully it will get easier as she gets older.

  • I put her down drowsy, but only at bedtime. It takes her 5 minutes or so to fall asleep. Her mobile entertains her.

We put him down drowsy and he does great. If he does cry, it's only for a couple of minutes then he goes to sleep. We do this for naps and bedtime. We started about a week ago and he is doing awesome with it. He is usually asleep within 10 minutes of b

  • We put LO down for the night drowsy and he puts himself to sleep. But he's almost 6 months old, he definitely wasn't doing this at 4 months. I usually rocked him to sleep at 4 months, I think.

  • Ok I have nothing to input on this except that I definitely cried a little reading those responses saying that soon the won't want to be held as much. I don't want my snuggle time to be over already. I'm so emotional right now!!

  • I do both.  She eats right before bed so sometimes she'll fall asleep while eating and other times not.  So, about half the time I am putting her down while she's still wide awake.  She sort of tosses around for a minute or two, sticks her

  • Oh lord. Every baby is different, and some need to be put down sleeping, others can be drowsy or wide awake. DS can be put down awake if he's been rubbing his eyes like he's tired, or drowsy, or asleep. For our babe, it doesn't generally matter, unless he
