XP: How did BF moms introduce a bottle?

My LO is 4 weeks old and we'd like to introduce a bottle of pumped breastmilk in preparation for when I return to work at 12 weeks. I pump anywhere from 2 to 4 oz after my morning feeding and am also looking to build up a freezer stash if possible. Kellymom didn't get at the practical details so I'm coming to you wise mamas.

How did you introduce your first bottle? Did DH offer it? How many ounces did you start with? Do you give a bottle every day?

In theory, I'd love DH to take one evening or night feeding so he can enjoy some daddy time and I can get some more sleep! However, I'm worried that skipping a feeding would jeopardize my supply (not to mention be really uncomfortable). Thoughts?

Thanks for sharing your experiences!

  • DH gave DS his first bottle during an evening feeding around 5 weeks old.  We didn't give bottles very regularly until DS was 4.5 months old (when I went back to work).

Each person is different on how well LO takes a bottle.  Some moms

  • Starting at about 4 or 5 weeks, DH would give him 1oz in a bottle once per day, then I would BF him until he was full/done.  Every few days we would slightly increase the volume in the bottle, until I think 2 oz as he was still nursing after the b

DH gave a bottle of about 3 ounces.  I was in the house, but not in the room, when the bottle was given.  Apparently, some babies won't take the bottle if they know the real thing is nearby.  I know some moms have left the house, but DS

  • I introduced a bottle at 8 weeks.  DD uses a pacifier, so I think maybe that is why she had no problems with taking the bottle.

I would not use a bottle in the night.  Way more of a hassle than nursing.  Plus lke you mentioned, you

  • We introduced a bottle at 5/6 weeks - right before DH went back to work.  He read the Kellymom "how to bottle feed a breastfed baby" or whatever that resource was called, and he had guidance from our breastfeeding class/handouts from class about h

  • I gave dd2 her first bottle at two weeks. I wasn't planning on that early, but she had just been admitted to the hospital for jaundice. She nursed in front of the LC, who said she did great, but they wanted her to take a bottle to see if she was still hun

  • We started at 3 weeks - I had been pumping after the morning fed and getting 1 - 2 ounces (Which I hear is normal) so it would take me about 3 days to get a full bottle (we started with 3 ounces).

My plan (much like yours) was to have DH g

  • Oh and freezer stash - you really only need .. enough bottles for your first day back - plus a few more - I'd say if you have enough bottles in the freezer (or bags but servings is what i mean) - for 3 days (meaning the time you are normally away from
