YUK, I'm Sick-how much tylenol can I take?

I'm coming down with a cold, and I'm clear on what's safe to take, but normally when I'm sick I take a little more than the basic prescribed amounts.  I started taking tylenol cold and I'd like to take an extra plain tylenol tablet in additon to the tylenol cold, do you think it would harm anything to take a little extra?

  • There's no reason to "take a little extra." Over-medicating is never smart. What you can do, however, is take it at the prescribed increments (every 4-6 hours or whatever).

  • I would only take the prescribed amount also but if you feel it is not enough I would call a trusted pharmacist and see if there is anything else they can suggest for you
  • What's the need for the extra?  The T.Cold has tylenol in it.

  • You need to double check the labels and see what the ingredients are. If there is any duplicate ingredient then no I wouldn't take it. Talk to your OB. Mine knows all my history and knows that the typical prescribed amount does not work for me and lets me take addtn'l -- only if I am not ingesting the same ingredient in more than 1 medication.
  • If you're worried about the medication "running out" in your system, stagger your Tylenol Cold. Take one, then an hour later take the second one. That way when 4-6 hours have passed, you've still got that second one in you while you can take another first one.

  • I'm a big girl, so that's why I normally take little extra, but the more I think about it, the more it's not worth it because although my weight might need a little more I know the babies weight doesn't so I'll pay it safe.

This is a perfect solution, and is recommended by my RN, MSN step-mom. ;)

  • 1000 mg acetaminophen per dose.  that's it.

did you check with your OB about the tylenol cold?  i think mine said no decongestants like pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine

I am not allowed to take Tylenol Cold either. No pseudoephedrine -- which is also why I can't take Claritin-D. :-( (I will admit that I took ONE pill of the Claritin D late Monday night, before I could get ahold of my doc Tuesday a.m. I really doubt one pill will hurt all that badly, and I didn't even feel any better. Boo!!)

I hate having a cold right now. I'm more miserable than ever.
